Ex-player: Xabi Alonso

I don’t think Alonso is signing on the bottom line until after the season is over and he knows what’s happening at Liverpool/City/Bayern. There’s no reason to rush it. Sounds like he’s talking to Chelsea right now, and perhaps leaked that to try to force Liverpool’s hand.

I honestly ask myself if Henry isnt under some degenerative condition we dont yet know about. Or, throwing it into the mix, are FSG fattening the lamb for sale, wherein, a manager on a shorter term deal is more sellable to the market. I just cannot make sense of FSGs decision making at the moment, something isnt right.

Then again doesn’t make sense that they are going buy several players.

I read the piece by David Lynch. We do not know that Liverpool are allowing this opportunity to pass them by, with regard to Xabi Alonso. If he signs for someone else and wanted us, then yes, we allowed it to pass by. But until that happens, it’s speculation.

My own speculation is it’s all but agreed, things are in hand, and it will happen swiftly. First of all we are waiting to secure CL football, so as to not distract from that one remaining objective.

I could be wrong, but that’s how I’m reading the tea leaves.

Rather it does, also they would then have an abundance of young players on long term deals.

Players the new owners and director of football don’t want?

I dont know what you mean here, as any new owners, wouldnt be new owners if they bought players they didnt want. Or they’d be idiots. On this issue, there are always assets a purchaser values and undervalues. In terms of saleability, it’s about generating enough interest. The buyer is who values what is offered the most. therefore this question seems conflated. But we’re off topic and this is for the FSG thread.

John Henry is not making decisions on the Liverpool Manager. He has delegated that to Hughes (and possibly Edwards)

I hope you’re right Red, but all the signs point otherwise.

I agree with you. fsg have proven many times in the past to be receptive for Liverpool fans’ wishes and calls. They (and thus their employees Edwards and Hughes as well) are certainly reading the room here. IF Xabi is indeed willing to come to LFC, then the deal must be already sealed, and it’s all about allowing Slot to leave at the end of the season, with his dignity intact.

Unless they have their sights set on another manager to replace Slot? But I can’t see who would be more appropriated than Xabi right now. Murphy’s interview in the BBC article posted above by @Kopstar is a worthwhile read and brings the topic to the point.

In which case Xabi isn’t going to be talking to Chelsea. I think it’s clear that, for whatever reason, we haven’t got a deal sorted. Very disappointing.

Except that, if a deal with Alonso has already been agreed in confidence (because publicly FSG continue to back Slot), then doesn’t Alonso have to go through the motions with other potential suitors?

No. He can just not be interested in the Chelsea role ‘at this time’.

The only thing that makes sense (in my tiny brain) is that he is either looking to shake out interest from Liverpool and/or he’s genuinely actively considering Chelsea. If he is indeed interested in us, we are mad to retain Arne and the club will start to feel that even in preseason, imo.

Maybe we are going for Luis Enrique?:joy::joy:

That is true. Chelsea are enough of a mess that it is entirely reasonable for someone to treat their approach with a straight “no thank you.” But I have taken a lot of meetings over the years with people I’ve got no interest in working for because it is valuable to get insight into how different employers are viewing the field and the market.

I don’t know, but maybe Xabi has asked all parties to wait until the end of this season before making their official moves, and in the meantime, he’s having informal discussions with them?

Except with us? Nah don’t think so, unfortunately. Smells very much like we’re not in the running for Xabi/ keeping Arne until October

Or maybe Chelsea are leaking the rumour of Alonso’s interest to the press.

Exactly. While LFC remain quiet, as they should.
