Ex-player: Xherdan SHAQIRI

Isn’t it more like a 50% loss on ‘our’ valuation?
Let’s be honnest that’s massive and my guess is the calculation is quickly made.

I read that his amortisation amount is around £7mil so I’d expect we want around that.

Reading between the lines of Klopp’s recent comments, moving players on needs to happen before anyone can be brought in, so get this done and let’s strengthen the squad. The difference between the two valuations is small in the grand scheme of things.

I’m not entirely sure it’s as small a difference as you portray it to be, in the grand scheme of things. The club is probably trying to stick to its valuations also because of the options we have available to bring in. I presume these valuations are based on what they’re worth to us, not just as saleable assets but also what it would take to bring replacements in. I can only presume that this means that whatever target we have for Shaqiri’s place in the squad, the price isn’t budging either.

If we’re not bringing anyone in then there’s no point in selling now at a knockdown price. Might as well wait until deadline day and see what else turns up and if it’s nothing then we’ve still got a useable player. I think (hope) that we are looking to bring someone in and that he’s probably non-homegrown so we need to shift someone sharpish which is why the proposed selling price for Shaqiri seems to be coming down. When Phillips goes we’ll have made a profit in the market so there can’t be a shortage of funds. Shaqiri’s replacement in the squad will be Elliott.

I think it’s more likely that someone has been lined up in the eventuality that Shaqiri leaves, rather than that we definitely want that person in at all costs.

The dropping price is more likely to do with the fact that he wants out, and other clubs will no doubt have heard by now that we apparently will not stand in his way.

He was signed for around £13m on a four year deal so around £3.25m per year on amortisation. One year left anything over £3.25m shows as profit now. Not that I think it matters much on figures under £10m in the grand scheme of things.

I think it’s also a means to an end. I don’t think we have enough room to bring someone in and use someone unless both Shaqiri and Origi move on, possibly Minamino or Ox too. But by letting Shaqiri go we technically have a place open on the squad list which enables us to add someone. Assumption being that new person would then be above Origi and possibly Minamino “encouraging” either or both of them to take an offer to move on.

Considering he has managed 2525 mins over three seasons, I would even take £5mil plus some addons.

Overrated player, overrated price.

:joy:

I don’t know it’s as complicated as that. Origi is probably irrelevant in all of this. He may not want to go but he won’t play if he stays. Same as last season. I’m sure the club will have factored all that in. Minamino might get games but I think he is more likely to be loaned out. Maybe Elliott will then be considered the 5th attacker.

Bottom line is we must surely be bringing someone in if we’re looking at cutting the price for Shaqiri. Doesn’t make much sense otherwise. I can’t see us making a profit in the transfer window after the season we’ve just had. It would look terrible.

Personally I don’t think we are going struggle to find the difference in this deal if it means bringing someone in.

I think funds are there probably the surplus players that need clearing.

Edwards has been quite tight on this in the last few years

I don’t see the point in keeping him just because he’s usable. He was shite last season for the most part.

With Elliot staying I’m not interested in seeing Shaqiri walking about the pitch playing static football. Get him moved on and commit to the high intensity football we’ve been building towards in pre-season.

Shaq appreciation post.

We paid maximum £15m for him and he was worth every penny. Last season was a freak for many of our players so I don’t count that and won’t hold that against him.

To get £9,5m is great business.

Thanks to the perfect squad player Big Shaq.

Shaqiri has left us with some great memories. The cross for Gini against Barcelona, his goal when we twatted Everton 5-2 and who can forget his exquisite first time pass against West Ham last season for Salah to score. There just wasn’t enough of those moments. Very gifted player and I’m sorry to see him leave but wish him well for the future.

I’ve always liked him as a player and a character and always wanted him here. The summer he came in it really looked to me like we were recruiting to try and move from 433 to 4231 with Salah as the 1, it just really didn’t mesh well and so much of the side performed better and more fluidly in 433. Since then he just hasn’t really fit. He’s still contributed when used and never complained, trained, kept his head down. Rumours of a bad rep and professionalism but he’s been a model pro whilst here. Just always got the feeling that Klopp was reluctant to use him wide in 433, he even started using him in CM eventually. Wish him luck, happy he goes with some medals and that I got to see him here (eventually) even if it didn’t really work out as good as I thought it could.

Favorite memory is being in the crowd as he scored an amazing bicycle kick in a meaningless money grabbing friendly against United in Michigan.

Injuries and competition kept him from ever being more than a bit player, but a sublime footballer at times.

Think there were enough moments for the games / minutes he played.

But Shaq was never going to be a 90 minute player for us. A good sub. A very good squad player. But never going to be a starter.
