Had some big/important moments, but there seemed to be a persistent lack of trust in him from Klopp coupled with an inability to stay fit.
Perfect in the sense of his apparent professionalism, but Elliott is 18 already looks to be a way better asset to the squad than Shaqiri ever managed to be.
Played 63 times for Liverpool, and for me at least only two of those were really notable - Man U and Barca.
I understand why we brought him in, given the circumstances under which he was available on the cheap. It was a punt, and I’m ok with us making those. But imo he didn’t do nearly enough in the chances he was given, and his terrible fitness record meant he was barely ever available when we needed him.
Young Elliott is going to give us so much more than Shaq did.
Good luck to him, but I’ve a feeling that in a few years he’ll be one of those players I’ve all but forgotten played for us.
Lyon should be a good fit for Shaqiri. He’ll play more regularly, in a less demanding league. Given his sketchy injury record, it should help him in theory to stay fit for a longer period than he ever achieved here with us.
I’ll look back at his stay with us as a happy time, not necessarily because of him, but because he brought us luck: we won the biggest titles with him in the squad, and he played his part as well to achieve these. The last season was completely rotten for him as for us all, so he wants to move on now and I can understand that.
He behaved himself in a very professional manner throughout his stay with us, so I don’t think that anyone at Liverpool will remember him in a negative light. It’s just that he couldn’t contribute as much as everyone would have liked him to do, and that’s mainly due to the injuries. Good luck at your new club, Xherdan!
I think this is down to Switzerland setting up tactically to maximise Shaq’s skills, which is understandable given he’s their most technically gifted player. Problem for Liverpool is that to get the best of him, you’re sacrificing a system that works better for us (given the squad we have) to shoehorn him in.
I had hoped for more from Shaq, but niggling injuries curtailed that. Beyond that, a good player, and from all we see a decent lad that was liked in the squad.
Seen some on twitter claiming we should be making more money on him than £9.5m. For me, that’s decent money for a player we only paid £13.2m for and signed up on a 4 year (+1 contract), that is now down to 1 year (+1). He’s 30 years old in a few weeks time, and has hardly been pulling up trees to command the £20m fee some were hoping for.
Good luck to him. That’s the total income from player sales up to around £43m now, and in the green for this summers transfer activity. Lets hope Edwards is closing in on a solid transfer in.
The fee is not amazing but it’s a buyer’s market and there wasn’t a lot of concrete interest. He’d have been on a decent wage, poor injury record, not fully trusted by JK, non-homegrown. Ultimately just getting him out the door was the objective and we’ve done that at a reasonable price.
He never really fitted in but I liked Shaqiri as both a player and personality. I do hope that story posted above about his hair transplant is true. Fucking hilarious.
Managed to play for some big clubs based on his unfilled early potential and sporadic moments of magic. Stoke really was his level, and he barely impressed while there, never scoring against any of the ‘big’ teams during those seasons.
Too inconsistent to ever have in our first team and nowhere near a ‘perfect’ squad player since you could never guarantee that his moments of magic would coincide with the moments he was called on to play, and he was just as likely to be invisible on the pitch.
I will always remember him as a ‘flop’ during his time here by the same merits that others consider others a flop. Would always have preferred Wilson to have had his minutes as I believe he would have been just as effective over the same period (ie a few moments here and there to help us win games, but ultimately not good enough).
I am glad he is leaving and I hope we avoid moves for this kind of player in the future.
He had some other decent games too, but overall it was only in moments.
He played that pass for Salah against West Ham last year which was a beauty. The rest of his game was absolutely turgid though and he was a key reason we were struggling to break them down. That sums him up for me.
Elliot’s performance yesterday was far more complete than any of Shaqiri’s, and that’s still with some obvious inexperience showing at times. There really is no good reason to keep Shaqiri around IMO, especially when you have two (Elliot and Gordon) top talents that play in his areas of the pitch.
Good luck to Shaq, but I don’t think we’ll miss him.
I loved the little nervous cube. I can’t see any regrets for having bought him nor for having sold him. I just wish him well and would love to see him play more regularly (but that’s not likely now).
He does better on the international scene because it’s a different game to the EPL. I bet he would have been good for Bayern if they had played him. Let’s face it he’s a good player (when fit) however he isn’t the level of a top teams starting lineup so would always be a squad filler here once Klopp got us on track, no shame in that BTW.
Yo Shaq…
You have left something of yours in the changing room!
Thanks for the memory of the inch perfect cross in the Barca game for Gini… and being the best distraction ever for Trent to take the Origi corner…! Magic
Good Luck
