Good bye Fat Bastard… He had few wow moments without being consistent. YNWA

We brought Shaqiri in to be a squad player and he fulfilled that especially during his first season with us. I dont doubt his talent or ability on the ball at all, its just he wanted more and there were simply more consistent and more energetic players than him. I do feel we are going to miss him, as he provided some good moments for us here and there , even off the bench. One can only hope the collection of Minamino , Origi and Elliott can step in there and make those moments of magic that shaq had sometimes produced off the bench or during moments they are given to play.

yeah but no player can fully compensate for the other 10 being out of sorts. Not even Messi on good day can do that.

I’d always taken you to be more a AFC style ball cruncher style shorts person

Look what I found. SBYM at work. Because we all know our Avatars are really us.

I am 100% certain that our players are coached not to shoot from distance and to play the ball into the box.

His game is basically shooting from 30 yards so - good player - wrong team

Why would they do that? :astonished:

Just a feeling I get from watching us play. Plenty of times Saturday we were in good positions 20-30 yards from goal and didn’t take the shot on.

To create better goal scoring chances. Klopp has spoken before about the need to turn 3/10 chances into 8/10 chances.

Basically shooting from distance rarely results in a goal. More often it would be better to keep the ball and try and work a better opportunity.

Percentages maybe? Pure speculation on my part?

Statistic football!

Added to what I posted above, shooting from 30 yards against teams like Burnley is stupid, because they are going to have eight behind the ball to block the shot, and you just end up giving the ball to Pope to waste two minutes taking a goal kick.

Logical football.

Not if it doesn’t work.
We’re not going into one of these extremes debates again are we?
You know I didn’t say we should just wack it at the opposition goal every opportunity.

If a player is good at striking from distance then having a few pots mights be a reasonable idea, particularly if you have a poacher to latch onto any resulting rebound.
Another point is that our shots to shots on target to number of goals doesn’t seem much better than taking a few pot shots. In fact a good number of posters have been calling for a few pot shots from distance (one reason for this is to keep the defense ‘honest’ by forcing them out).

Seems odd to buy a player with a long shot reputation, train that out of him then try to sell him with one of his attributes trained out of him.

I think you’re massively over-simplifying the issue here.

I think it’s quite obvious that we stress the intelligent use of the ball. If it makes sense, then of course someone would take a shot from distance, such as Sturridge against Chelsea in his last season, or Salah against City when Ederson ran out, or Fabinho against City once again. But we are almost never in that kind of situation. Your whole idea of having a poacher to latch on to any resulting rebound is moot when the opponent’s defence is crowding out the penalty area already anyway.

Also, I don’t think that taking long shots has been trained out of anybody? They quite clearly still can do it, and in fact that Ox still regularly attempts it (and does fairly well out of it) should show ample evidence that we don’t stop anyone from doing it.

You should really take some time to read what’s been posted. You know just to have an inkling of context!

Nope, I just do terribly with sarcasm in text.

Nope, and the same for firing off shots from 30 yards out. If a player can see a route to goal, and it’s an 8/10 chance by all means take a shot. But frequently it’s just shooting at a wall of defenders. That was something Shaq was a bit guilty of sometimes.

By ‘coaching it out of him’, I think what Klopp was keen for him to understand was when it was better to recycle possession and look for a better opportunity that blam the ball at the goal.

And don’t get me started on the Kop shouting ‘shoot’ every time a player has the ball 30 yards out. Absolutely fucking stupid, that.

We only got to think back to the days when Coutinho was in the side… and how predictable the side became with his very own ‘shoot on sight’ agenda for the spectacular…
Jurgen loves to keep the opposition moving at all times… it is what tires them out eventually… mentally and physically… think of the high number of goals we get in the last 5mins… Doesn’t make sense to put the ball over the bar from 30metres out and allow the opposition to have a breather…
Every now and again… with an element of surprise… take a pot shot… it does pay off sometimes
