Evening,
Thanks for providing further information on this subject. I believe it to be the downfall of communicating through a written format but I never suggested that people had been duped by Bolsonaro - not for one second suggesting this was aimed at me personally.
You make some very valid points, that as humans we are all guilty of, that being we only hear (embrace) what we want to hear.
To clarify, I have little emotional attachment to Fabinho apart from respect, in regards to the part he has played in our recent success. I just felt that @Sweeting a forum member I respect, made some comments that in āmy opinionā were wrong. Nothing more than that.
To be honest, I was more interested to hear other members thoughts on the willingness of Football bodies to embrace/ accept sponsorship from companies which are state funded.
The Brazilian far right has wrapped itself around religion.
So if you are a devout Christian it would be ungodly to vote anyone but Bolsarno. Of course letās be honest if Lula hadnāt been arrested first time I doubt Bolsarno would have won.
The problem is like the Maga lot itās going take far more to shove them back in the kettle. Youāve just got to hope the floating voters stay voting for the none quasi fascists.
Itās sad though that footballers who were at the forefront of challenging the military junta are now firmly on the side of those who want to replicate it.
Probably why Iāve never overly warmed to any of those lads, though I will say Alisson is the best GK Iāve ever seen play for us.
On the other hand, everyone is responsible for the small part he or her has control over. Fabinho has a choice, and with that choice, he influences the general direction of where the game is going, and directly supports a repressive regime or not. Heās responsible for that, and same goes for Gerrard, Hendo or others.
I understand your arguments about hypocrisy regarding the money in the PL, but itās wrong to say that as individuals, we are helpless. Regarding our own life, we have choices to make, and these choices influence the general direction of society.
You are repeatedly bringing politics into the threads when the players beliefs donāt line up with your own. Please stop. If we wanted discussions on politics we would go to the threads about politics.
This perspective is why sports washing works. When political entities insert themselves into non-political aspects of our life it introduces politics into regardless of whether you want to see it or acknowledge it.
The bolsonaro regime did use sportspersons to boost their popularity.
I do think that Alisson became critical of bolsonaro later after the covid handling disaster (his wifeās a doctor) even if he and the other brazillian footballers were pro bolsonaro upfront.
Wouldnāt criticize the Brazilian footballers too much on their support of Jair Bolsonaro primarily for the religious reason and the impression that most right wing politicians give of being someone who are pro development etc
When weāve got agreement that these people the players support and promote donāt give a shit about people like me then Iāll butt out of whatever their beliefs are.
Iāll bring politics into it, mods might disagree and itās up to them but as with all the quotes about āIād take the moneyā as a gay man I donāt have the choice to stay silent on calling this out.
Fabās personal politics was something he brought to public attention. That is a genie you dont get to put back into the bottle so comments about it fair game. Not when he fucks up a pass of course, but he is now pursing a deal that is facilitating a gross sports washing endeavor. You have to be pretty obtuse to not appreciate why people would reasonably connect the two.
If we had someone who refused to play in a game when we were honouring Pride because it violated his personal beliefs Iād never want to see him in a Liverpool shirt again. Because that isnt politics. That is just bigotry (often justified due to religion) that has been wrapped up in a political position.
I dont see many people doing the same over somoneās view on what the right upper tax rate should be or their view on trade tariffs.
