Champions League games, including the final, could be held in United States from the year 2033 onwards as Uefa look to enter a new global commercial rights deal. (Independent)
Did anyone at UEFA consider the effect of jetlag on players returning for domestic fixtures?
Probably not.
Imagine having to play on the west coast of the USA on a Wednesday evening and then playing our inevitable 12:30 Saturday kickoff here…
Like all sport in SA - very glitz and glamour, until you leave the main arena.
Bone dry in terms of booze and weather.
Added bonus of capital punishment, or losing limbs for breaking some of the rules. There’s a reason that footballers who play in Saudi do not live in Saudi!
I actually miss genuinely crap pre-match entertainment. There is one I particularly remember from one of our 1980s Wembley finals (it may have been the 1986 cup final) which involved some guys with model planes, attached to long pieces of string, flying them around the centre circle. Every so often a couple of the planes would crash into each other, sending debris all over the pitch and resulting in a large, sarcastic cheer from the crowd.
I seem to remember that they were, somewhat ironically, called “The Wonder Wings”. Whatever it was, I can remember it 40 years on, which is far more than whatever song-and-dance routine that they usually have at these events.
Next we will have to accept the final being played on a newly laid astroturf pitch because there is no way to protect a grass pitch from the damage of the half time show and the pitch would be unplayable in the second half.
I’m just laughing about it these days. I absolutely loved the world cup and used to watch it assiduously. But with time, those FIFA cunts have managed to have me totally disinterested. Well, done.
