Existing revenue streams are largely tapped out and the US has emerged as the best avenue for obtaining the next bump in revenue and so the Prem and La Liga have both been jockying to position themselves as the best positioned to do that.
It’s a totally bullshit move that introduces competitive imbalance into the schedule in a way that american sports dont care because they dont have any to begin with and all their leagues have long been a tv show more than a sport.
Following up on the Villarreal vs Barcelona to be played in Miami…
Key point:
Villarreal CF was not going to receive absolutely anything to play in Miami. However, FC Barcelona does seem to receive an economic benefit (article cited that the figure is up to 5 million euro) to move to the United States.

Still don’t see the massive uptick in this…they’ve tried to push football over there for years and it still remains quite niche. I doubt a game a year will do much.
When it happens all I’ll do is wonder why there is a La Liga game at 1am.
“Fifa has begun redrafting its regulations on staging domestic league games in foreign countries and is seeking legal advice over whether it can ban them. World football’s governing body would like to outlaw the practice but will be guided by legal opinion in its first review of the relevant regulations for 11 years.”
Hmmm, FIFA is putting on a show so that the governing body can say later, “Hey look, don’t say we did not try to stop it…”
Damn it, I am getting more cynical with each post that I made!
FIFA is legit incentivized to outlaw this. Not for good of the game, but because it leaves them as the main avenue for transcontinental “meaningful” clubs games
Wonder if there should be a separate UEFA thread, or the title modified to have both FIFA and UEFA.
Horse has left the barn…and the authority is opening the door a bit wider.
Keypoint:
Under the new rules any club in contention for European qualification the following season would still be required to highlight any potential MCO issues to Uefa by 1 March, but would then be given additional time at the end of the season to resolve any problems if multiple clubs in the same ownership group have qualified for the same competition.
Throw in this as well and no one is really taking this seriously… we continue to elect governments who want more, not less of this and anyone trying to change that seems to have to wage war on enemies from within (See Ed Miliband)
