FIFA World Cup 2026 - USA/Canada/Mexico (Part 3)

So would I, but mainly because I tried Golf and was completely crap at it. I was invited along to one event and eventually sloped off to the bar. One golf nut asked me if I play. I tried to humour him by saying that I gave it a try. He asked me what my handicap was, so I told him it was a complete inability to hit the fucking ball.

Oh genetically it’s all pretty much the same people fighting each other, I know that. Go back far enough even more so.

My expertise is post 1800s though so I’m a bit useless on this kind of stuff. Basically when some fat German kings came over to the UK. Thats where I start. Anyhow with a surname Hurst ā€œweā€ won that’s all I need to know :joy:

No, culturally they were not Danes. You can use your etnic card as much as you want (though a weak card it is in 1066), but as an actual fellow historian, I do not accept that you call Norwegians anno 1066 for Danes and they are even less Danes now :wink:

Danes ā€œlostā€ 1066 ok then.

They also rowed across, my point is it’s all bullshit as I have all 3 blood lineage in my family line and anyone from north England probably does due to Dane Law and the recent knowledge that populations did actually mingle.

Anyhow swung back to Norway just now as I saw some English ā€œpatriotsā€ abusing some imaginary Norwegians.

Danes were generally not involved in the battles of 1066, apart from those who fought with the Anglo-Saxon host.
The word ā€œDaneā€, does not refer to northmen or those with a viking occupation, but specifically refers to the ethnic group Danes back then and the Danish today. You cannot as a historian write Dane for Northmen. Sorry, but I really am that asinine when it comes to history if i am talking to someone who ā€œshould know betterā€.:slight_smile:

@Magnus

How are you?
I am fine. And you? Hopefully, you are too fine.

Today, i do support Norway against the team from the island.

Kane plays football and is one hell of a striker. That’s all that counts, surely?
The thing I don’t like about him is when he decides to be a defender or defensive midfielder. Reminds me of Rooney too much.

Can we use the word Dane if we’re talking to @Dane or do you have a problem with that as well Magnus :sweat_smile:

@Dane

Do you are from Denmark?

I am fine. Loading up emotionally to the game by abusing one of my favorite Englishmen on the forum (Matty), by being a silly petimeter.

Wait a minute I’m lost, Harald Hardrada was King of Norway right, he fought in the battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066.

That battle was vital in 1066 because it opened two fronts?

You moved me away from the Dane’s after moving me away from referring to Norway?

Not very important this, but the original intent of my rude intervention, was to nosedly, like an ā€œbut aktuallyā€ sketch, arrest you for using the incorrect term Dane in reference to Northmen :wink:

But the point I made originally was a battle between the Norwegians and then one against the French,

Only later did I make an error on Dane Law and Danes

I mean, since it is Match Day and all, I figured I should be in the ā€œzoneā€ and attack Englishmen for the most petty of errorsšŸ˜†

Aha, I zoomed in on the error like a hawk and spent 3 posts insinuating and mocking you for it.
I didn’t care about the rest you wrote, as it was not incorrect :joy:

I’d expect nothing less from someone with such a strong Swedish name :wink:

Inselaffen :wink:

But since I am outrageously petty today, google ā€œwhich Scandinavian was first to be named Magnusā€.

Probably your source will say ā€œlater the name became popular among both the Norwegian and Swedish nobility and eventually it became a more common name etcā€ (just guessing tbh).

ā€˜Sweden has the highest number of people named Magnus in Scandinavia. With around (0.73%) of its population bearing the name, Sweden has the largest absolute and proportional count’
