I don’t find it at all hard to put petty club rivalries behind me when they are playing for England. Why would I hate them just because they play for rival teams? Anthony Gordon is from a family of reds and also a really nice modest lad according to a friend who knows his family.
The talent isn’t at the same level these days. They lack a lethal goalscorer like Ronaldo at the time, or magicians, like Ronaldinho, Romario or others. Vinicius isn’t bad for instance, but not at the same level by any means. They also lack one or two strong personalities, like Zico at the time, or Socrates.
Still, Brazil being out so early is sad for any world cup. I don’t want to see too many European teams reach the latter stages, but that’s exactly what is happening now. As it stands, all non-European hopes will be with Argentina again, but I’m not sure they go all the way this time. Who else could do it? Morocco? Columbia? Hmm…
I only saw him come off the bench for a few minutes once, and I haven’t heard anything negative otherwise. As long as he stays with the Spanish squad, he surely doesn’t have a serious injury—and that’s not how it looked to me, either. They’re playing against Portugal today, so we’ll have to wait and see.
Yeah commentary on US tv was going on about “several incredible saves” but he made 0 incredible saves he just does massive dives at basic stuff. He made some good saves no doubt but nothing he stopped should have been a goal either.
I’ve just seen the BBC highlights of the match (thanks to my works’ VPN…) It’s difficult to say how representative that is of the whole match. The red card was unlucky, if he hadn’t touched the ball he was unlikely to have touched the player either. The penalty against Kane was a bit suspect as well. It looks like he got the ball first. The VAR slow mo footage was inconclusive.
Next game is Saturday night against Norway. It’s 23:00 for me, but I expect I will stay up for that.
In my opinion, anyone who dishes it out has to be able to take it, too. England—and its fans in particular—spend all their time spouting disparaging remarks about other nations disguised as “banter,” yet they wonder why they aren’t liked.
I find this is a problem with many fans in general. “Bantz”. In any other walk of life it would be regarded as hate speech. If you aren’t taking the piss out of someone for perceived sporting ineptitude then it’s not banter, is it?
Their CBs had more talent than this entire current brazilian crop. Ricardo Gomez, Ricardo Rocha, Lucio who would dribble past the entire opponents outfield players. Magic and joga bonido everywhere.
I played lots of team sport in my day. Some team mates over the years were cunts off the pitch but not so much on it. Some were cunts on the pitch but not off it. Some were cunts both on and off the pitch.
Tommy Smith was a racist thug and a thoroughly unpleasant man off the pitch. Jimmy Case was a thug on the pitch..
Suarez was just a total cunt.. I could go on.
If they had played for rival clubs they would have been reviled by our fans…and how do you think Klopp’s antics would have gone down with us if he had been Chelsea or United’s manager?
Just watched the highlights myself, and while Quansah was indeed unlucky, it was mainly the poor technique on his part that caused it. Almost missed the ball entirely.
Also, it was surprising to see how much England struggled defending set pieces and crosses. Good thing that their next opponent doesn’t have big players who head the ball well. Oh wait…
Anyone else like the look of Lira last night for Mexico? Admittedly my body did give in to the fatigueness of driving back from London up to Liverpool which meant I only caught the first half.
