He made one very good save, the header right down at his feet. But his other contributions were to make saves that were entirely routine, and to act in a way that amped up the arousal at a time when you want to be playing with clear heads. The exchange with Alexis exemplifies that perfectly not only because of the emotional behavior, but also because the whole thing came from him fumbling what needed to be a straight forward gathering of the ball.
Because he went to only a single world cup and didnât play in a single game.
Yes but also as another welshman, if we had him as goalie and got to semi finals and finals in the wc and euros , youâd be proud as fuck that he was our goalie .
Sure. I love Hal Robson Kanu for what he contributed to 2016, but if people were speaking of him as one of Englandâs greats weâd be shaking our heads.
What people are responding to is some commentators trying to make the case that Pickford is under appreciated and should be considered one if Englandâs greats, and the evidence is pointing to his longevity. The response to that is that it is an indictment of English football that someone of his middling quality and whose emotional reactions are so intimately related to Englandâs tournament failures has made that many appearances and has had so little of a challenge for his spot.
Gordon Banks howsthat? ![]()
Was that the one who scored to lead to savages âheâs twatted itâ quote ![]()
Clemence was unfortunate in that Shilton was a very good goalkeeper in the same era.
Having said that, England werenât good enough to join Scotland in the 74 or 78 World Cups so neither Shilton or Clemence played.
I nominate @Flobs to respond ![]()
Heâs got the âWeâre not good enoughâ match against England to look forward to on Saturday
Yeah it was a full decade where they alternated. Even in the Euros in 1980 Greenwood alternated between them with Clem playing the first and last game and Shilton the second. It makes it even more remarkable that Shilts got 100 odd caps given Clem got 60 odd himself in that time frame
Wait til next week
Gordon Banks!
So Pickford is better than Southall in his pomp then?
And Ivan Toney, a man who appeared in a World Cup semi final, is clearly a better striker than Ian Rush?
(Just picking out two elite Welshmen who were world class, but because of circumstances, never got to do their thing on that particular stage).
FFS! Isnât that a minimum requirement to post on here. Place has gone to the dogs ![]()
Come on red dont turn into flobs, i said at major tournamentsâŚ![]()
Iâm not bitter or resetful towards Bellingham, or any player.
You made him out to be some sort of hero for a petulant slap, I disagreed.
You really are straining the point to unimaginable lenghts, because you canât accept a contrary opinion to yours.
And whilt I obviously donât know the tension he was feeling, well I doubt you do either. Yet you feel qualified to assess his actions as being worthy of someone who should have a bit of cop on.
Zidane clocked Matterazi good and proper, for a sneaky comment. Straight up fury. He didnât tip toe behind him like in a game of tag. Thatâs what your hero Jude did.
But keep defending him.
Very noble indeed
Gordon Banks!
There used to be a really big tournament in the summer here in Orlando that brought teams from all over the world. It was 7 on 7 on half sized pitches but full sized goals. One year I was playing on a lesser team - good locally but players who hadnât experienced what it really meant to say there were levels, so a lot of them were getting ahead of themselves in terms of thinking of who weâd get in the KO rounds once we won our group.
Anyway, we win our first game then came up against Casablanca FC in our second. These guys were at least 20 years older than our oldest player and they fucking thrashed us. Not just in terms of the score, but we barely touched the ball for the entire game. It turns out they were a ringer side that gets together a few times a year to play in these tournaments and were made up of players who all played on the 86 Morocco world cup side. A team who topped the group with England, Poland and Portugal and gave West Germany a real scare in the second round.
With that second hand experience of world cups, I say I am adequately qualified to say Jude was a prick in that exchange.
