FIFA World Cup 2026 - USA/Canada/Mexico

Even a deep run can require only a small number of wins. England’s run to the semis in 2018 earned them just 3 - two wins in the group and a win over Sweden in the QF (the win over Colombia on pens in the second round would have been classed a draw)

Thomas Partey, facing multiple rape charges, he gets in fine though.

Yeah, I was thinking about Italy’s low number and their runs to a trophy. 1982 they won 4 of 7 but took the trophy home.

Ármin Pécsi senior debut for Hungary today in the friendly match against Kazakhstan.

Meanwhile, Szoboszlai scored.

Edit: Oops…forgot that Hungary is not in WC this year. Should not be in this thread.

Just on the referee, I know it’s not the point but couldn’t he ref any of the matches outside the USA?

The refs are all based in Miami, and are actually flying into the venues in Canada and Mexico. They have extensive programs to try to ensure consistency, some training, and consultation meetings. Essentially, the referees try to take advantage of having a global gathering of some of the very best match officials for a few weeks and do a lot more than ref a few games each. I am sure for this Sudanese fellow, being admitted into that collegium is as much a part of the pinnacle as actually officiating the four(?) matches he was assigned to in the group stage.

Not sure how reliable this source is…I have not heard anything on TV or radio. Could be some mayor or someone mentioned he’s welcome, but no official words.

Updated: Removed misleading source. The “welcome” is not in any ways official from Government of Canada nor FIFA.

In theory yes, logistically though making that sort of change now is not practical.

You you need to get new visa for him for either Mexico or Canada which is not guaranteed to be completed in time (although I suspect both of them would ensure the visa process gets sped up just to make the US look like cunts).

You would then also need to find another ref to send to the US (how many would want to after seeing how poorly one of their collegues has just been treated). Once you find a ref willing to go to that shithole of a country, you would need to get a visa for them - looking at how shit they are governed, the chances of 1 getting the visa approved and 2 getting it done in time seem non-existent

We already knew that the US is a wild country, filled with arms and with a lot of casualties when they are used randomly. We knew that a lot of structural racism is applied against the non-white population. We knew that there is no meaningful kind of social system, and that in this country, it’s very much “Every man for himself and God for us all”. We knew that a lot of people ignore almost everything outside of their own country.

What we didn’t know yet is that their racism now applies to everyone outside of their frontiers, whatever religion, skin colour or cultural background, and that no-one is welcome anymore. Duly noted.
