Winston-Salem has extensive historical connections to German culture - it was originally founded by German Moravians before America was independent. Within North Carolina, it has preserved quite distinct traditions, there is a Christmas market there in the old downtown for example. Lots of descendants may not know much about Germany, but probably happy to adopt Germany as their ‘second team’.

Yeah, it is one of the few good things about a US world cup, that almost all teams will have some form of community somewhere with connections to the country. It was a mark of what was to come for this fuck up of a tournament that one in which the final is being played in New York (not really) that both Ireland and Italy missed out, but most other teams will have some form of in built fan base some where based on those historical (or recent) migrations and Id imagine some teams will have picked their home base with some regard for that.
Of course this time around a lot of those fan bases will pretend it has nothing to do with them for fear ICE will round them up for being an illegal

Thanks for that information 
. I thought it was really nice how warmly the team was welcomed there—just to mention something positive for a change. There are bound to be heaps of negative stories about this World Cup anyway, simply because things happen and negative news tends to spread faster. However, that’s only one side of the coin; we shouldn’t overlook the friendly, warm-hearted people there.

I so ‘fuming’ about that poor referee. It takes a good 8 years to get to FIFA level to referee a World Cup match which is the pinnacle for every referee’s career. This guy may not get another chance to go to a World Cup and be a referee.

Yeah but they only bar non-white guys from entering.

Gutted for that referee, I’d have been in tears. I hope he can rise above it and go on to referee some huge games in the future.

I have lost the enthusiam to watch the World Cup matches now. One official match hasn’t even been played yet.
I am sure more chaos and disorganisation is going to come to the tournament.
