FIFA World Cup 2026 - USA/Canada/Mexico

Unfortunately like all speedy wingers has very dodgy hamstrings.

He should have gone to turkey like Salah he’ll only be a sub at spuds.

Limiescouse is not wrong, but neither are you in pointing out the effect that futsal had in continuing the development of some flair. Romario and Bebeto were both too old to really have developed in what Brazil turned toward post-1982. Romario was already 16, Bebeto 18, substantially already developed by the 82 Cup - and the changes actually took a few years to begin. In that sense, 1994 was really a hybrid year. Most of the players from the 82 team had been cleared out (many probably too early), but most of the '94 players had grown up in the old system and really just been exposed to the new ‘European-style’ for the last stages of their development. In hindsight, that may have been the best outcome, but the overhaul continued forward. I remember listening to a podcast where one of the speakers said the most damaging player in the history of Brazilian football was Cafu, because he was so nearly perfect measured by both the old and the new standards that his emergence made many people think the Brazilian model of development was doing everything right (he is about 4 years younger than Romario)

The period from 1992 to 2002 is an interesting one in Brazilian football, because there was a real dialectic/dichotomy in thinking - people arguing that Brazilian football was losing its soul versus those decrying the idea of ‘soul’ as another fancy term for tactical naivete. That debate has never really stopped, but it has moved back and forth. The 2002 World Cup win is a real milestone, both for the sales point you make, and the fact that both sides of the debate took credit - however, in development terms it was the ‘new guard’ that won the debate. They really remained in the ascendancy until 2014, which is for Brazilians really the third great tragedy (with 1950 being the first). In the era since, the basic struggle has really been financial - Portuguese clubs in particular are picking off talented players as soon as they are teenagers, so it becomes hard to measure how effective their development process is now.

When I was a kid growing up in Canada in the 70s, in residential areas games of street hockey were everywhere. Drivers would just know to slow down, some kid would yell ‘car!’, kids would grab the goals and move them off the street to let the cars pass. I can genuinely say I have not seen a game of street hockey in this century.

Probably too many local bylaws forcing out the kids playing street hockey. I think that in Mississauga, resident can call the city to put in a complain on street blocking or something similar. Population grew so much and more cars on the road. That’s the sad part.

Regarding the Aussies vs Turkey match that I missed, I just saw the score and the possession chart, wow.

I can remember the council sticking “no ball games” signs on any park or bits of greenery around the estate after the local witches covern complained about kids playing football. Then the evil old biddies started bitching on about groups of kids hanging about with nothing to do.

A special small “debut symbol” has been introduced for all players participating in a World Championship for the first time.

Wayne’s World was real? :open_mouth:

I did like Canadian sports centres though. 6 ice rinks and a sports bar.

Oh no, I’ve done it again haven’t I?

It’s gone viral.

This is cruel if true.
In Turkey, the city set up a giant screen so people could watch the match against Australia. Everyone gathered to see the “World Cup”… Until they realised it was a livestream of a video game

He also over-celebrated right in front of the Kop when he stopped Rio getting a cross in a few weeks back. It was already 3 or 4-0 on aggregate at the time.
He’s a fucking prick who hopefully gets his comeuppance soon.
