FIFA World Cup: Qatar 2022

We had a top notch “what could be your surprise team at the World Cup” on one commentary last night the answer was “Argentina”.

They get paid for this.

Tifo seems to be making a series on Qatar.

They’re taking wide swipe with this, so looks interesting.

With Kimpembe pulling out on top of Varane’s injury, it’s difficult seeing past him getting significant minutes now.

This is just appalling. Really makes me hope for any action against those associated with the ruling elite - including their children living in the west. The middle east should really be renamed the middle ages. Ironic that Iran was the most progressive and modernised country of the lot before the Islamic revolution.

Dua Lipa has denied reports she will perform at the Fifa Men’s World Cup opening ceremony in Qatar on Sunday.

The singer said she will “look forward to visiting Qatar when it has fulfilled all the human rights pledges it made” when it became host.

but was the west any better during its middle ages?

They were Civilised before many Western countries.

Something went badly wrong.

No it wasn’t. But the thing is: we aren’t in the middle ages anymore. This is the time of an interconnected world in which informations pass through in a matter of minutes, if not seconds. Iran are a full part of that as much as any place on the planet, even though their government does everything it can to ignore it.

That lack of relation between their theories and the reality is what is increasingly becoming unsustainable for them, and their people are also increasingly aware of that. The pressure will only continue to mount for them, whatever they might say or do.

Religion is not the cause of things going wrong. It’s about extremists distorting religion to their own whims and fancies.

Philipp Lahm’s column in the Guardian is quite nuanced.

Definitely this. From it’s establishment up until after the European Enlightenment the Islamic countries tended to be those where academics and scholars were free to operate. They were arguably history’s greatest librarians and archivists. You can see it’s effect on European culture by the fact that we refer to Arabic numerals or use algebra.

I have heard it said that the break came with the printing press which was used extensively to disseminate knowledge within Europe and the wider world but which was eschewed by the Muslim world for over 300 years. Whether there is any basis in that is probably for a different discussion.

This is actually excellent and well-written. Lahm is an intelligent bloke and proves it once again.
