FIFA World Cup: Qatar 2022

Apparently FIFA were supportive of that as one to suck it to UEFA.

That’s the problem it just wouldn’t have been, the whole rotten edifice has to fall.

Let’s just cancel international football entirely. Keep players fresher for real football.

You need to get rid of FIFA for that.

Something as absurd as this was also the inevitable end point of what had come before. Corruption, sometimes almost out in the open, has been a part of the awarding of every tournament in my adult lifetime, with the possible exception awarding it to Japan and Korea in 96. I dont mean that as a whaaboutism, but more that when such levels of corruption are so common they are an open secret and no one seemed to get in any trouble, then this sort of absurdity was always inevitible.

Not necessarily, just shift the power balance. FIFA can still hold the World Cup, but club football would be under no obligation to release players unless a negotiated agreement was in place. This is what happens with the IIHF and the Olympics vis-a-vis the NHL. It is a flawed and frustrating model in its own right, but all of that pales next to what amounts to a criminal conspiracy awarding a World Cup to a host that never had any intention of adhering to any of the conditions set out to mitigate the fundamental fact that is was not in any way a worthy or suitable host.

Not even Donald Trump couldn’t have fucked up that press conference to a more offensive level.

Well said Melissa Reddy, just catching up. Awful from Infantino.

As for Qatar, they have spent billions on PR but are now arguably in a worse place for it. Before all the hoopla with the World Cup, most people didn’t have much of a feel for them. Sure, if you looked at it, there was a fair amount to dislike, in the midst of all the wealth, but it wasn’t really on anybody’s radar.

Now, after spending billions, we hear a lot more about Qatar, and it is all the dodgy stuff - lgbtq, migrant workers, bribes and a general heavy handed approach in dealing with guests they invited into their country.

Hopefully they regret this, and hopefully it has the opposite effect of what they hoped to achieve,

at least the Spanish seem to be enjoying themselves…

They might as well have got Manuel over.

I find this is bordering on slightly offensive.

Infantino. “…as a child at school I was bullied because I had red hair and freckles.”

That’s…that’s terrible!

At least he could afford to have both surgically removed.
