I didn’t have as much of a problem with that shot - I’ve been wanting him to be more aggressive. Passing would have been the better decision, but again, I expect my attackers to be a bit selfish from time to time.
I really didn’t like the reaction from his teammates, though. Especially Kerkez - who are you kidding, man? You’ve made more boneheaded decisions than anyone.
Dress it up however you want but Cherki has an impact with the ball. We had 10 men but that goal he scored against us, turning a player and casually slotting it in - that is the quality you expect from your number 10
From Wirtz we aren´t seeing that. He is actually regressing. We saw a few moments last season at least.
On the general points in the thread, I couldn´t really care less about his tackling. I only really care what he does with the ball and he is doing nothing. He looks so timid with it, lacking any of his former flow and slickness. As was said, he is a big concern right now. That´s just the situation.
Cherki 11 v 11, did far less than Wirtz and couldn’t handle the man for man marking, he only came to life when we went down to 10 men.
With regard to the tackling, I do care, he shirked several opportunities to win the ball convincingly, even more so when he is struggling in other areas.
The whole squad is a big concern at the moment I’m just hoping that something clicks before Christmas. Unfortunately with our schedule it’s a tough ask.
When I look at it like that the only thing we as fans can do is support the team that’s on the field.
In regards to tackling, I take your point to mean showing the effort and desire. He looks a player bereft of confidence.
Wirtz does some good things here and there but is he the guy I ever think of when we need a goal? no.
Number 10s in the premier league have moments but I can’t think of a single top side that builds their team around a number 10.
You play the ball into a number 10 around 25-30 yards from goal and he is swarmed upon, teams are waiting for it. It is not just Wirtz.
Teams end up ball watching and waiting for the number 10 to do something magical… result is that it breaks down and you get countered. The main player for us who I didn’t see ball watch too much was Ekitike. He and Wirtz played the ball faster to each other.
The midfield need to stop taking 3 and 4 touches , yes i am looking at you macallister!, get back to playing 1 and 2 touch , not over crowding the areas were writz is supposed to be and instead using the wide players to better effect. Give the opposition something else to worry about,
Yeah, for everything we think about that sham of a club…I can only tip my hat off to Cherki who’s been fantastic since he arrived. Annoyingly one of the best signings in the last few years, now whether City really paid £30m for him or not…is someone else’s job to investigate
He’s put the bed the lazy narrative aswell with only Mac and Anderson covering more distance on Sunday.
Tackling itself may not be high on the list, but general work off the ball and pressure absolutely is. Especially under Iraola.
We also can’t mix different aspects such as distance covered, number of sprints, pressures applied, duels, tackles, etc.
Pep Lijnders said not long ago that we (used to) press to win the ball, not to force opponents into zones they’re not comfortable in and wait for their mistake. That the key was in the very last few yards and in the duel, how eager and capable are you to actually steal the ball. And yes, that means offensive players being able to win the ball.
The fact that Wirtz covers a lot of ground doesn’t mean he’s been so far a successful without the ball player for us. It also doesn’t depend solely on him, because we have a striker ahead or slightly ahead of him. They all need to prove they can defend better from the front. We’ve seen slight improvement, we’ll need more.
It’s nothing revolutionary, you watch some of the best football sides in Europe and see what do front players do without the ball. Regardless of certain bigger or smaller differences in styles.
Liverpool supporters having a cherki little wank over a player who chose to sign for a corrupt, cheating team. He chose to play for cheats. Doesn’t that contravene our mythical no dickheads rule?
He is a good player, no argument. But its unfair to compare him with OUR player, who is obviously short of confidence at the moment.
I dont expect Wirtz to be tough in the tackle. I dont want him putting in the KM with running stats, being top of that, but walking off the pitch not doing much with the ball.
Ive no idea how we solve this issue. Might be best to cut our loses and we both move on.
But we decided to move for Wirtz over Cherki. Arne even met Cherki. But the recruitment team decided on Wirtz. It was only after that Cherki was acquired by Man City.
The leak that brought the charges against City was in 2018, they were charged in 2023.
Or are you suggesting a player signing for them nearly a decade earlier than the leak that brought this all to light should be demanding them to open their books to him before he signs on the dotted line?
