The club may think Wirtz is the key deal of the summer over all other combinations thats what they want.
There is also a possibility that they are looking to alter the formation. I was expecting a central defender to be high up the shopping list, but it looks like we are prioritising wing backs.
Social media ITKs are trying too hard now. Theres a plane thats due to fly into Manchester today from Munich…its a Lufthansa boeing ffs…
Whenevr
That is true, but on the other hand, look at our moves for ie. VVD or Alli. They were monster-moves at the time, and yet, they turned out to be exactly what we needed to take that extra step. Hopefully Wirtz will be part of the same category.
Dele?
Allisson
Transformative signings. We do them now and again. Mostly they work (Ali, Virj). Nunez might be an example of a failed one, but he wasnt brought in with Edwards in charge, and appeared to be one Klopp pushed for rather than the data guys. Caicedo was another we went for recently in that bracket.
Im all for him and not concerned about the price. We only act this way when we are generally confident it works.
One thing’s for certain, whether it’s Wirtz, Cherki or somehow both…we’re (re)building a proper team in the image Arne wants and that, in my eyes at least, is the most important thing we can do post season.
£130m of course is a lot of money for us and time will tell whether it was a gamble paid off - until then anything else is pure speculation, if the club are prepared to pay over the odds to get a player they really want then that’s club business. From a starting point we should all look to get behind this.
Kyle?
Are people going off Cherki from a couple of games?
Hasn’t Wirtz been the best German player these past two years.
To be fair to @FGred he has been calling for us to sign Cherki for several months now at least
Wirtz seems almost like VVD for £75m. That’s why I’m not too concerned about the size of the fee. The club are adamant he’s the one that we want, and we’ll pay to get him. Yes, there are alternatives, but it feels like the metrics and other indicators must be lighting up like a Christmas tree, so much so, that we’re not afraid to offer close to what Leverkusen want, it’s just the structure of the payments.
But I say again it’s just one opinion. How much of Ligue have people watched?
There is a minimal element of risk in every transfer, of course they can be different.
I’m not afraid of the transfer fee nor the pressure that might come with it.
There is a factor that as a fanbase, we’re not that used to these kind of moves (unfortunately).
We’ve given big fees, even if lower than this one, for players over which I or a lot of us had much more doubts.
It was clear we would break our previous transfer record very soon, with the recent success, financial picture and need to continue evolving or getting new key players.
I do daily watched Ligue 1 and I don’t need U tube to tell me how good a player is but Cherki is a decent player and Liverpool would have improved him and I never suggested he would be better than Wirtz but he would be good in that front line for us being two footed and he mainly uses his left one. Cherki was brought on in the last 30 minutes last night up to that point Spain were wiping the floor with France he changed the game for France and they nearly equalised. The French sports press typically are blaming everything on Konate when actullally all the mistakes were made by the left back.
I don’t understand why people are suddenly come to the conclusion that we want Cherki over Wirtz we are I hope all in for Wirtz first and foremost as the club have done well identifying a specific target and going all out for it. The Cherki thing is a nice to have rather than essential IMO.
Exactly!
I do agree on that count as Cherki might turn out to be a dickhead?
Fair enough, I’m more reacting to people who see a selected bit of highlights or two matches and judge a player.
Personally I haven’t a clue about Cherki but I know Wirtz is a player I’ve always wanted here.
