Former player: Curtis Jones

So what do you think of Gravenberch being on 280k per week?

That is the reference!

Take any reports on what a player earns with an enormous pinch of salt.

I realize that the numbers must be taken with prudence, but everything you can read on internet points to the fact that Jones’ salary was around the ones of Elliot, Leoni, Bajcetic, Endo. The likes of Bradley or Tsimikas seem to earn more than him already, whereas the highest earners at the club (VVD, Isak, Grav, Dom, Gakpo) seem to earn more than five times as much as him.

Also, it seems that Jones’ new salary at Inter will be around £115k / week. That’s around what Frimpong earns. Could the club have matched that, and would the player then have stayed? We’ll probably never know.

I don’t think the salary is what it is about, and I don’t think they would have struggled to put him on 115k.

He wants to be the main man.

Really? Has he told you that? As others said, I’d be mightily pissed off too if I was him, and Gakpo was proposed five times my wage while refusing to offer me an long overdue improvement. I too would look to leave, especially after having been quite badly treated by Slot last season.

As @Sportbilly1966 wrote above, he’s probably broken after last season, and hasn’t his heart set on us anymore. But that’s mainly the club’s fault I think. You don’t disrespect a valuable player like that over two years without feeling the consequences.

I really don’t get why this is the Club’s fault. Seems almost a default position these days whenever there’s something someone doesn’t agree with, “it’s the Club’s fault”. I fail to see how the Club has disrespected Jones nor can I fathom that his contract was not renegotiated over the years. The fact is from the some quarters on the outside Jones was viewed as more valuable to the Club than the Club viewed him as but that’s no slight on the Club in my opinion. Leave last season aside as that was the worst season in the career of perhaps all our players bar Szoboszlai, he’s not done anything extraordinary over the course of his career to suggest he was worth the salaries being suggested or that he should be viewed as the main man. So why is that the Clubs fault?

So you don’t think that he’d have deserved at least the equivalent of what Frimpong earns? That’s what he will roughly get at Inter now. I don’t think that such a salary would have been outrageous for a player of his status.

Regardless of how we rate the on-field performances of Curtis or Gravenberch, there is clearly something wrong with our players’ pay structure. There are simply too many unjustified—and, to me, unfair—disparities in salary that I personally dislike. I also didn’t like the situation last season, where there appeared to be “second-class” squad players who were treated as if they didn’t belong. I just hope that has changed by now, or will change soon.

We don’t know enough about the club’s payroll to make such a determination. The figures are never made public; all we have are estimates that could be miles apart from the actual pay.

It’s not that. The player has an agent and there is an evaluation process by the Club I’m sure. If Jones’ pay structure wasn’t negotiated over the years then I can’t get my head around that being the Club’s fault

Where did you get that from?

I think we are going to need a lot of salt, n’est pas @Limiescouse :grimacing:.

Can’t see anything good in this deal.

:man_facepalming:

For years it was said that Diaz earned something like ÂŁ20k. It was miles off the truth.

The interesting thing with Jones is that (unless I’m wrong) there has never been any talk of a new contract. Konate and Trent were both offered new terms. For a homegrown lad that is quite telling.

Nah, there’s been plenty of ‘If you hate Curtis, you hate the very fabric of this club and city!’ over the years.

Ya fucking wool.

Curtis Jones, you know, an ongoing situation. I talked to him on the first or second training, and I valued him a lot, he loves this club and that was clear. But I understood the outcome would be what it is in the end.

One of the things in Armband gate was he could clearly be seen mouthing (paraphrasing) something like Im done with this club, I cant be here no more.

I have liked and defended Jones a lot but its clear there is a disconnect between how the club valued him and the stature he thought he had earned at the club to a degree that he wanted out. Its a shame, but good luck to him.
