Former players and managers - general discussion

Some team, that. Stunned to read they finished eighth in the league, five points off the champions, after losing three of their last four games. They also lost the FA Cup final 2-0 to Arsenal.

I want to see Arne dressed like George Kay for the last match of the season.

This was probably the reason in later life, Paisley showed no compunction when it came to his ruthless team selection duties.

Bob Paisley was dropped from the starting lineup for the 1950 FA Cup Final due to a change in the team selection, with the directors, not the manager at the time, choosing the players. The directors made the decision to drop Paisley from the starting lineup, which was a decision that he found disappointing. While he was initially upset, he remained at the club and continued to play for Liverpool for several more seasons.

The directors choosing the team was a major sticking point, with both Matt Busby and Bill Shankly not taking on management rolls at the time. It was one thing that Shanks insisted on changing when he joined.

Many of those were in the team that finished bottom of the League a few years later as we entered the wilderness years…

We lost 17 out of 21 away games…we went down and Everton came up…painful..

Duncan Disorderly has placed one of our best centre backs as his most difficult/toughest defender he ever faced… Dismissing the likes of Tony Adams, Sol Cambell, Ferdinand, Vidic, keown and Steve Bould… see how he describes it here…

Liverpool Icon Was Ferguson’s ā€œToughest Opponentā€

ā€œThe amount of respect I had for that manā€

The rough and tumble of Premier League football is always on display in the Merseyside Derby. It’s why Liverpool’s encounters with cross-city rivals Everton sit atop the list for the most red cards in top-flight derbies (23).

Ferguson first came across Sami Hyypia during his time at Newcastle and immediately learned how tough the Finnish centre-back was. He recalled a collision between the pair:

ā€œBig Sami Hyypia at Liverpool, I always say, was my toughest opponent. He was big, good in the area, not the quickest, brave. I remember once I flattened him at Anfield.

I was playing for Newcastle, and he was probably getting the better of me, and I’m thinking, 'this big f**r, he’s getting the better of me’. I came across and banged him and out he went… gone. He got stretchered off and came back on."

He added:

"The amount of respect I had for that man after he came back on the pitch, he could have just easily swallowed it and walked away.

I gave him a cheap shot, I flattened the boy because he was getting the better of me. He was carted off at Anfield and five minutes later, he was back on. I thought: ā€˜You’re more than a good player, you are tough as well’."

Hyypia was unbelievably consistent during his 10 years at Anfield, helping the Reds win the Champions League in the Miracle of Istanbul in 2005. He cost just £2.5m, which has proven to be one of the biggest bargains in Premier League history.

The fact that he ranks higher than the previously named English defenders as Ferguson’s toughest centre-back speaks volumes about his physical and mental toughness.

Fins are notoriously hardy. But one of my best friends grew up playing with him, and partnered him at CB in the Finnish U21s, and said even among them Sami was known for being tough. Knowing that makes watching those scenes after his last game where he broke down that much more impactful

Congrats to Clynie for winning his first trophy in his career.

:smiling_face_with_sunglasses: :joy:

Surely Slot’s achieved more already…

Like he won a league in Holland and now has a PL

Sorry i forgot 5 Swedish titles and a Danish title is top notch stuff.

I do find it remarkable that he won his last honour in 2001. That’s 24 years before he retired :joy::see_no_evil_monkey:
