Yep, that’s fair enough. I suppose that was the kind bit I was referencing, as the memory sifts out some things with the passage of time. He had his injuries and definitely had his moments as a player, but I recall a player who also liked a tipple and wasn’t the most professional.
Still, the old football romantic in me is glad to see a former player, at the end of his career and long past his best, getting fit to play the game we all love, even if it is at a lower level. Good luck to him.
yeah im torn on that…i understand the point, the other side of the coin is that he had to get out of there, Liverpool, in that era, were possibly not the best fit for him.
to me he needed somewhere that took away the side distractions.
I’m not so sure that would have been any better for him. He was already showing signs at Newcastle of not being as professional as he should, and didn’t have any senior pros there at the time that could mentor him and show him the importance of hard work on the training pitch
Thankfully, we have the structures in place to prevent a signing like that from happening again. I’ve no ill will against Carroll. He didn’t want the move, but could understand that Newcastle couldn’t turn that sort of money down at the time.
Yeah, was looking for forward to that partnership, at least for half a season (I think Torres would’ve left in the summer of 2011 anyway). I’d say we would’ve been better off without signing Carroll, even when Torres left.
