I remember the Guardian’s Spanish footballing correspondent at the time (Sid Lowe?) really excited by our signing of Aspas.

At a certain point in that summer of 2024, I thought there was a chance of him staying as one of the 4 CB’s instead of Gomez. But I think he made the right decision. We all did, actually.

Yup he’s had a good career.

Former Liverpool goalkeeping coach Jose Manuel Ochotorena has died, it has been announced this morning.

The Spaniard served under Rafa Benitez from 2004-07 at Anfield and was a famous goalkeeping figure in Spanish football for his exploits with Real Madrid and most notably Valencia.

Real Madrid announced the passing of Ochotorena on Monday morning, saying:

“Real Madrid C. F., its president and Board of Directors are deeply saddened by the death of José Manuel Ochotorena, one of our club’s legendary goalkeepers.

“Real Madrid extends its condolences and affection to his family, his teammates and all his loved ones, as well as to all clubs where he played.

“Ochotorena wore the Real Madrid jersey for 6 seasons, from 1982 until 1988, during which time he won 2 UEFA Cups, 3 LaLiga titles and 1 Copa de la Liga.”

Mr Ochotorena was 64.

The Celtic owner, Dermot Desmond, really lashed into Brenda. He seems to know him quite well.

It was a full-blooded attempt at character assassination, a branding of Rodgers as untrustful, a perpetrator of untruths, a spreader of falsehoods; divisive, misleading and unacceptable. “One individual’s desire for self-preservation at the expense of others,” wrote Desmond.

Perhaps because of legal reasons the BBC has edited a lot of what was in their earlier article on Rodgers’ resignation. This bit isn’t now in the BBC’s piece:

"The Irishman said: “When we brought Brendan back to Celtic two years ago, it was done with complete trust and belief in his ability to lead the club into a new era of sustained success. Unfortunately, his conduct and communication in recent months have not reflected that trust.”

Desmond claimed Rodgers was told in June the club were keen to offer him a new contract.

“Yet in subsequent press conferences, Brendan implied that the club had made no commitment to offer him a contract,” he added. “That was simply untrue.”

Desmond insisted that every player who was bought and sold during Rodgers’ tenure was “done so with Brendan’s full knowledge, approval, and endorsement” and claimed “his later public statements about transfers and club operations came entirely out of the blue”.

Desmond added: “He was given final say over all football matters and was consistently backed in the recruitment process — including record investment in players he personally identified and approved.

“When his comments were made publicly, I sought to address them directly. Brendan and I met for over three hours at his home in Scotland to discuss the issue. Despite ample opportunity, he was unable to identify a single instance where the club had obstructed or failed to support him. The facts did not match his public narrative."

So, Ange back to Celtic?
