Former players and managers - general discussion

Xavi on Jari Litmanen:

“When I think of Jari, I think of the sauna. He would go in there every day,” recalls legendary Barcelona midfielder Xavi. “He wouldn’t wear underwear but he had football boots on. I wondered about it. He said that way the boots would fit better.”

Just 31 and without a club. Dan is so much better than this.

The weird thing is apart from 1 rant by Simon Jordon, I don’t ever remember any of his managers ever calling him a problem player in terms of attitude or his actions, it was always more a frustration at his ability to stay fit for a run of games.

The one period where he got a run of games without picking up injuries was the 13/14 season when him and Suarez ripped the league a new one.

Exactly. Only complain I can remember is Klopp saying that Sturridge should have courage to play through pain barriers.

No Mascherano???

I’ll let older posters decide if Molby was better than Mascherano.

Totally different sort of player.

I would compare Molby to Alonso more than Mascherano as they excelled more when having someone beside them doing the heavy lifting/grafting of the defensive side of them game.

If I was to compare Mascherano to anyone, it would probably be Souness or Steve McMahon

I’d love to see Mascherano try Molby’s kit on.

Not only different, but Molby was here much longer than Masch.

It depends as always, if you’re making an XI that needs to make some tactical sense, or you’re just putting the best individuals (that also depends if you’re picking the better player in their prime wherever of the best LFC servant) in those places.

I’m fine with both.

I presume that overseas excludes Ireland for some reason otherwise Whelan surely gets in there?

If so, I think that’s probably about right as an XI from the last 40 years or so.

That’s an interesting comment from Gerrard. I had to watch it a second time to make it clear he was talking about last season and not 2014

Interesting Instagram post from Rushie today on Maradona’s 60th claiming that the year before Juve first tried to buy him Liverpool turned down a bid from Napoli for him. I think his struggles at Juve are often over stated, as that was an era when getting into double figures for league goals was a phenomenal achievement, but can you imagine the carnage if that version of him had have put alongside peak Diego?

Rush was like a Gazelle…
No defender on the planet was ever going to catch him when he got goal-side of them…
However, italian teams in those days were schooled in defensive formation like no other teams ever… anything more than a 1-0 win was seen as a goal-fest…
Was at Anfield for a testimonial Rush was invited to play in whilst he was at Juve… The crowd were singing throughout the entire ninety-minutes…
:musical_note:Bring Him Back… Bring Him Back… Bring Him Back…
Bring Him Back… Bring Him Back… Bring Him Baaaaack… :musical_note:
Which the club then proceeded to do…

Lets hope the crowd don’t sing the same next time Moreno plays at Anfield…
