well obviously no two football careers ever really paralel…theres always differences, my point wasnt what Kuyt was able to do and his strengths and weaknessess, and if Carrol could have equalled him as a footballer at this club on any metric, my point was he was one of those guys who made the most of what he was given…
Carrol was a bull of a unit…cracking shot on him, and he also had a bit of charisma…football charisma…but he failed to make the most of those traits, and failed to try improve on the weaknesses…thats my point…success can be judged by taking what youve been given naturally, and running with it.
Carragher was another one…really had no right to have a song asking for 11 players to all be him…not at this club…not even in his own era…but the song was more a tribute to what he did with what he was given (my opinion, i cant vouch for the guys who sang it week in week out)…thats success…
Great to see Sturridge in the A League. Should kill it. When I watched LFC v Sydney FC from near the fence a few years ago Sturbridge’s skill stood out the most. Hope Perth added some injury clause into the contract.
Yeah, I didn’t necessarily mean a success by being Liverpool’s main man/goalscorer for a few years. Of course there are different levels of success. Luckily we got Suarez. From one of the best piece of business to one of the worst in the space of a few days. But I just think his chances were really slim. I understand he know wants to put that angle “if only I gave my all and listened to coaches…”, nah I don’t buy it. That’s just his experience now looking back and appreciating more some periods in his career. Maybe depending on who’s the manager at the time, he would’ve remained as a backup, but not more and not for a long time I don’t think. I don’t think there was a potential Carragher/Kuyt even if he gave his maximum (which is only what we can ask for players to give 100% and be smart, think about the team you’re playing for), etc.
When looking for effort above skill… Look no further than Kevin Keegan.!
Jeeez that guy ran his socks off every single game he played in… Coming from the coal mining industry in Scunthorpe, it was as though someone (probably Shankly) had said to him… any less than 100% effort every game and you are going back down the mines son…!
Eh, what a player for LFC he turned out to be though
I sometimes think Keegans ability is undervalued, as his workrate is highlighted. He wasn’t a Dalglish, but all the hard work in the world wouldn’t have made him as good as he was without a decent skillset to work on. His performance in the 77 European Cup Final was sublime. Vogts was a world class defender snd Keegan destroyed him.
I was at Anfield for his debut… From watching him then, ‘buzzing’ around the pitch… over the coming seasons there can be no dispute that he improved every aspect of his game… He obviously applied the grit and determination he had in spades at Melwood, in learning how to become a better and more skilful player as the seasons went on…
Never believed him to be a natural though, as in the George Best talent school for example.

Savage.
You kind of have to wonder why the club gives him a shout out at all.
