Weâre massively off topic so Iâm replying in the former playersâ thread.
Clyne was a decent purchase for where we were at the time as a club. He was solid, nothing more. I felt he was too easily beaten by a ball played to the back post but other than that he was ok one-on-one, ok crosser, thatâs about it. He was unfortunate with injuries and then other personal issues but equally, that allowed Trent to break through.

Reposting here from Bobbyâs thread
Torres leaving made it a bit bitter for me. And the fact I didnât know then that Suarez would become such a monster for us.
What a wierd transfer window it was!

Clyne was probably the best english RB in the league at the time when at Southampton. He did okay for us, but his limitations became fairly quickly apparent and had some tough luck with injuries which essentially finished him off as a player for us. Once the news started leaking about his off-field antics,.I lost a fair bit of respect for him as a person, but as a player when youâve had the likes of Josemi and Degen in your team in recent memory, I wouldnât say he was rubbish.

A couple of people have made reference to off-field antics, but I donât remember ever hearing about these. What did he do?

Nothing super duper terrible but this sort of thing:
There were rumours at the time that one of his âinjuriesâ was the club sidelining him until he sorted his shit out after failing an âin houseâ drugs test.
There was more to it. I have considerable sympathy for Clyne because his behaviour was symptomatic of things that he was struggling with at the time. I donât know whether he has spoken about it openly since so will not say anymore.

To be fair, when he is fit and playing he will run rings around the rest of the league.
The question will be just how fit will he need to be to be able to play?
Andy Carroll on his time at Liverpool:
âLiverpool was completely different. I should have embraced their ideas, what they wanted. Thinking back, I really didnât appreciate what I had and what I could have achieved.â

The latter is just something usual you hear from someone much more experienced now as a man and looking back at how his career went + where heâs now (nowhere).
The former⌠even if he had embraced our ideas, what we wanted⌠whatever that means, I donât think he wouldâve been a success.

maybe not a success on the stats charts, but a success of sorts can just be a guy who gives it his all at his highest level.
as in the way most LFC fans wont(dont like to would be more apt) hear a bad word against Dirk Kuyt âŚhe was what he wasâŚbut he gave everything to be itâŚand thats a success on one metric.
but i know what you meanâŚ

Yeah, I get it, but I donât think he couldâve achieved even that. Kuyt was different. His effort was immense, but it wasnât all about just effort. He had certain quality and could adapt to different positions/roles. You could do something else with Kuyt, as we did (ended up a different player to the one we thought we were getting when he signed). I donât think there was much hope for Carroll, even if he tried harder or listened to us or whatever he wants to say now.
