General IT Thread

I agree. Google image search is very disappointing. I’m not sure why.

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to see what people think about Windows 11. I’m still using 10 because there seemed to be some issues. Have they been fixed? Is it worth upgrading now?

Nord vpn is my best friend now by the way

Been using 11 a long time babay, long time Windows Insider 8,8.1,10,11)

Works just as well as 10 for me.

Had a Toshiba laptop that I ran 11 on from the start and now use it on a Dell 5490.

Does Flikr have a search function?

Hi Folks, here’s one for the website gurus. I want to put a feed to recent twitter hashtags on a website. I can link an individual tweet but can’t find a way to do this for recent hashtags without buying in a specialist widget. Any thoughts please? Cheers.

As an example:

Google has lowkey become a generally shit search engine. One of the bigger issues is it really over promotes new content, which is often not what you want when doing a targeted search. Duck Duck Go is much better for that stuff, but no idea what it’s like for images.

Spent an hour today connecting a Windows 11 laptop to a printer. A job that had earlier taken 3 minutes with Windows 10. The fact that it ultimately runs Windows 7’s control panel tells you all you need to know about the superfluous new suit it wears.

Is it a WordPress website?

Sadly, no. Just been down that rabbit hole.

Sat in the office with two people jerking each other off over an excel program they’re devoloping to solve a problem that doesn’t really exist.
Even if their hours of work pays off and we save those 10 minutes a week. As soon as one of those guys leaves in 12 days, we aren’t going to use it anyway.

@Klopptimist perhaps you can help me understand?
Just had a door to door come round usually I tell them where to go. Anyway this guy started off with next week the fibre optic will be installed so you’ll lose ADSL.
Well if ADSL which passes by telephone wires will be out doesn’t that mean that Fibre optic isn’t and is just a glorified telephone wire?
So for one week the telephone wire is going to be cut.
As they hadn’t sent me a letter I hadn’t a barrage of stupid questions to ask the guy so in disbelieve I asked how does fiber optical affect telephone and why didn’t I recieve this nutty information by letter?
Apparently if this guy hadn’t seen me I would have recieved a letter within 2 days, so I insisted on recieving the letter away as the fuckwit didn’t have any documentation to pass me.
What is this fuckwit world coming to when you don’t recieve any official notice (or explaination for that matter)?
Just a fuckwit knocking on your door who seems to know even less than me about what he’s talking about (give him a training course before sending him out with a stupid message)!

I see no reason whatsoever why your phone line should be cut because they’re running in fibre. For example I have both fibre and adsl links at work for double redundancy. They’re probably run and installed by a different company anyway. I suspect it’s a sales guy selling scare stories but don’t quote me on that. The fibre run and phone line can happily co-exist. Certainly wouldn’t happen here but I know little about France’s infrastructure and connection methods. Cheese and wine is excellent though

Thanks, that’s more or less what I thought. The guy is lucky he caught me by surprise and I hadn’t a clue what he or I were going on about. Would have ripped him apart if I knew for sure.

We get a lot of these types of ‘sales’ pitches here were they use the ignorance of the public to push things. Really though what kind of respectable company sends a young fuckwit to tell you such a thing?
Surely a letter or at worst a pamphlet through the letter box is cheaper and easier for all, rather than this double guessing game.

This would be my take as well. They are completely different lines that travel different routes to your home (under vs above ground). There is no reason the installation of underground cable should impact your existing phone lines.

Not necessarily though. Mate of mine lives in Belgium. Their phone / data system is linked to a local distribution hub. The whole thing recently went fibre and the adsl was literally cut off. But as this was just the data supply to the local hub, made no difference to him. Our street is being fibre’d after Christmas finally, they’re running down the same conduit as the current phone lines. They don’t just run the fibre and cut the phone though. Hopefully……

Not sure what type of pictures you’re looking for, but I’d search Pixabay, Pexels and Unsplash.

DuckDuckGo is Bing under the hood, but with better privacy.

I have started paying for a search engine, Kagi since last May and couldn’t be happier: I came for the privacy and stayed for the quality of the search.

I feel there’s much less noise and crappy results of page trying to show you ads

I use unsplash, it’s decent. Now on paid version.

What made you pick Nord in the end?

I’m finally going to organise one for our household. Looking mainly at Nord and Express.

Free?
