First game and stretchered off. Fingers crossed it was precautionary and he won’t be out for long. Hopefully he can spend any time away from training perfecting his English and experiencing the city with the intent that he’ll be here for 15 years.
I can’t believe the cruel luck he’s had last night. Amazing debut for an 18-year old centre back and then gets stretchered off for what is probably an ACL injury that will likely make him miss the whole season. I’d take an embarrassing cup loss over that any day.
Carter Pinnington might have to step in if one of the current 3 get injury or suspension.
WHAT??? Is that confirmed?
Surely Slot would go with Grav, Endo, or even Robbo at CB before going with a non first team player?
No
Not confirmed but he immediately clutched his knee and he had to be carried out on a stretcher after receiving oxygen. Slot said it would have to be assessed but it looked like a bad one, probably ACL injury.
Poor lad, that is cruel indeed…
And of course, it hits us at the one point on the pitch where we are unsufficiently covered… Gomez will break down at some point as he always does, and then we’ll be left with VVD and Konaté. Missing out on Guehi could really hurt us.
But anyway, here’s for a good and fast recovery for Leoni. He has still time on his side.
I’m actually hopefull that it isnt too bad. It was difficult to see exactly what happened but I saw one good angle showing his leg got caught under him as he went to ground, but thankfully it didnt bend in any of the wrong directions. It was more a case of going through the full range of motion really quickly with a lot of weight on it rather than something that made the knee move in a way it isn’t supposed to.
He was obviously in a bit of distress but there were a lot of ways this could have looked a lot worse
Slot said the player felt it was a bad one and sometimes the player is right but we will have to assess tomorrow when he comes in and review it via a MRI scan.
It sounds like it could be bad but can we not put words into peoples mouths please. Also looking at the straps.

ACL tear on his debut, no less.
Gutted for him, wishing him a speedy recovery and all the support he’ll be receiving from the club will only make him come back stronger.
According to Romano, Leoni has torn his ACL and is out for the season.
At least we have someone in the team in Florian Wirtz, who suffered an ACL at a young age and came back just as good as before, so hopefully, he’ll be there to help Leoni out.
Liverpool centre back Giovanni Leoni has torn his ACL and will be out for several months.
After excellent debut in League Cup last night with also Arne Slot very happy, an unlucky injury for Leoni who will try to be back before the end of the season.
Absolutely gutting. Poor lad…
I wrote before that he has time on his side. However, I wonder how many players went on to have great careers after being out for a whole season with an ACL tear at the age of 18… Somebody knows examples?
It’s not only a season we are speaking about here, but he’ll also need an awful lot of time to come back to full fitness, to gain back confidence in his body etc.
So, this seems rather like Bajetic: pure bad luck destroying what could have been a flourishing career. Hopefully that won’t be the case though. Fingers crossed!
Oh FFS
Well, he hasn’t had a full career, but Wirtz was 18 I think, when he suffered an ACL tear, and he came back and got back to his pre-injury form for Leverkusen.
