Giovanni LEONI: 2025/26

We were signing another central defender, Marc Guehi, right up to the closing minutes on September 1, when the deal fell through. That’s a very clear indication of what the club felt we needed.

A collapsed deal for one player, and an ACL for another, is rotten luck. Especially so soon into the season.

We will surely sign another central defender in January, and probably another next summer.

It was a couple of games into his liverpool career still under Rodgers. The knee injury he had at the same time Virgil was out was a Patella Tendon injury.

He definitely did his ACL in one of Klopp’s first training sessions. Then he had the bad one with England just after Virgil did his.

I’m not aware of a bad injury under Rodgers. I don’t think it would have been an ACL though, as he was training when Klopp arrived, and that was in the October of his first season

Man I am so gutted for Leoni hearing this. On his debut match! I hope he comes back better than ever next season. Send him to surgery right away!

Yeah Rodgers had actually technically gone by then, but he did it while away for international duty before he’d had a chance to work with Klopp

October 4th - drew with everton and Rogers sacked
October 5th - players report for international duty
October 8th - Klopp announced
October 13th - Gomez does his ACL playing for England U21s
October 17th - Klopp’s first game in charge

The later patella tendon one done in that horrible 2020-21 season was on england duty as well

Looked ot up. It was his ACL in Oct 2015…that was the one in training and his first bad one by the looks of it.

Sad news for Leoni, hope he recovers without any adverse reactions , he does have team mates who can offer support who have come through ACL injuries successfully, but I agree with Rab, it is the time missed training and developing that is hard to replace for a young player.

I now hope the club and other clubs look at the use of the type of astro turf they have at the side of pitches, it isn’t the 1st time I have seen someone slip on the turf during a game, dangerous for players!

feel for the big lad,

he fitted in easily last night and looked very comfortable on the ball

was looking forward to seen more of him in the coming season,

wishing him a speedy recovery and pray he come back a stronger and better player

Tough news for him, but I assumed it had to be a serious leg injury based on his reaction and the fact that he had to be stretchered off. Fortunately, ACL surgeries have gotten better and better over the years and there’s no reason why he can’t have a full recovery at his age. My hope is that he hits rehab hard and spends as much time as he can around his teammates so that he doesn’t feel totally isolated.

Hopefully he is ready for preseason and back to full match fitness by this time next year.

Has it been confirmed by the medical staff? I thought they have to wait until for any swelling to come down, then have scans (MRI) for proper diagnosis.

(I am in denial state.)

Indeed, it’s horribly bad luck. Unfortunately, it won’t make go away Konaté’s and Gomez’ tendency to injure themselves at some point.

Yes it was rotten luck for that to happen to him also when we didn’t manage to sign Guehi I thought at the time that it would come back and bite us in the backside as some point. I have a feeling that if we pay half what we agreed with CP at the end of last summers transfer window, we should perhaps persuade him not to wait until the summer.

Poor lad so unlucky.

Am I missing something? I don’t see any reports on the severity of the injury or even what it is, so why the doom and gloom? It looked serious, however …

EDIT: Apparently I did miss something. Crappy luck.

Why so much secrecy with players injured? Just tell us. The club know by now what the injury is - in fact they would have known in the sheds. And the players posts above suggest it’s heavy.

In the football codes here they always announce a grade whatever injury and will miss approx whatever weeks.

I know you have to duck and dive a bit with the forthcoming opposition for short term knocks and strains but for long term injuries just say it.

I now run the risk of an official Liverpool update that I missed….

May this not unfold like a few years ago when every player in the squad had a crack in the backs. Stay good Virg Konate and Joe.
