Shhh we don’t want Palace to realise this, yet.
And why do you think they would not have watched his Serie B games, at least, to build a profile?
I suspect I might have seen him in a Serie B game vs Samp, who are my favorite Italian team. If I could’ve done that, why would a professional recruitment team not have done multiple times more…
Lets have some respect for these guys…
There’s obviously something the scouts (from every team interested in him) saw that made them look to get him in early. Even Inter Milan were touted as having an interest in him.
Blocked source using a fake Paul Joyce account btw… But a bit funny tbf
Edit
You should block this account because it is strongly associated with a newspaper that is banned here
Please reread what I wrote. It is not our ability to have seen the footage, but the value of the observations made from those games.
We have a fairly good idea of how our recruitment team works at a high level and “confidence” is a key component. To authorize a move for a player earmarked for a proper first team role the confidence score must be sufficiently high, and that requires the metrics we used to identify them were generated over a sufficiently large number of games (threshold of 100) or sufficiently high standard. There are only about 6 leagues in the world to which that applies and Serie B certainly is not one.
The twitter handle of Joyce was the giveaway.
A player profile is not simply about top level games played. Yes, ideally that is what you would want. But a player profile is built several ways and the Serie B games can be rich material in tracking the development profile of a young player, as is this case.
Its not as if 100 high level games threshold is carved in stone…
Woohooo!!! Welcome to Liverpool Leoni!
Well, I have this side blocked, so I already knew. They’re did the same a while ago , telling everyone that Robertson will be the next vice captain.
Edit
They’re using some different accounts.. all with Anfield XYZ, with a fake Joyce source.
It’s not my model. I am just speaking about what has been said about it by the guys who built it and applied it
Ah, thanks for clarifying that, I’ve deleted the post.
I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do. He will learn from the best in the business at Liverpool and that will give him every chance to reach his potential. Presumably we rate that potential very highly, since we have been so decisive and want him at Liverpool, not on loan. Bring it on. As mentioned above, the possibility of him becoming home grown is a nice little bonus.
I’ve wondered about the wisdom of letting Quansah go and then buying someone younger, with a lot less experience, for a similar amount of money.
The way I see it is that we are preparing for a future without Van Dijk. If Quansah is to have a chance to be a part of it, his chance is best served by playing week in week out at a good level in the Bundesliga, rather than spending too much time on our bench. For all we know, we bring Quansah back on his buyback clause and he goes on to boss it in defence for us for years to come.
If Leoni is to have a chance to be part of the future here after Van Dijk, the path for him, as a younger player, appears to be come in, train, learn from the best, and then we will see what’s what. He will presumably see plenty of action in the domestic cups, plus occasional other minutes here and there - maybe even a little more than that? At his age he can afford to do more bench time than Quansah as time is on his side. His need is a bit different too, as we want to give him elite training and coaching at this formative stage, to set him on a path to reaching his potential. Quansah has already had all that, and his biggest need is to play and put it all into practice.
I would not be surprised if both of them feature in our future defence. Still, there’s a long way to go before then. Let’s see.
People in football get paid for making decisions and seeing (sometimes bigger or smaller) margins between someone’s quality and potential. Many different levels and variables that lead to those decisions. And naturally, it’s often in confliction with what a good portion of fans of that club think. As for Leoni himself, I have no idea who he is or how he plays. So I’ll be patient and see what he’s got.
The main reason for me being relaxed on this is the massive fees for young defenders these days, such as Yoro, fofana, or Gvardiol. All well over £65-70m.
I also dont think the club do the deal if they are confident hes got the potential and ticks the boxes. With Klopp gone and Edwards back involved, confidence is higher.
Dont you mean RyanBabelAir.
He’s young, he’s big, he’s quick, he’s got room to grow.
His starting level might be a bit lower than Quansah (dunno, haven’t watched enough of Leoni to judge), but his ceiling is almost definitely higher as club clearly don’t feel Quansah will grow into a Slot defender or they wouldn’t have sold him. Develop him well and this will go down as an incredible transfer.
Up to us to make the most of it now. Much prefer that. It’s in our hands as to how it goes

Liverpool have been after this player for a while - Yoro, Colwill, was Hato another?
If he hangs about like that he’ll miss the airplane.
