I was a kid when Elton John covered Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. I actually heard it long before I ever heard the Beatles version. I was a dumb kid and didn’t know at the time Elton John didn’t write it. Later, I heard the Beatles original, and it took some getting used to, though now I recognize it’s superior. Still, EJ’s version has some merit, though the ending is a bit cabaret.

Yeah, I love that version. Think of the gravitas it took to rip that song away from Trent Reznor and make it the coda of his (Cash’s) life. Wow. Gave me both chills and tears the first time I saw that video. Good shout from you.

For Tom Jones it’s really poor imo. Sometimes artists should just retire then again they can make lots of money from past reputation. I also find Francis Cabrel poor these days, then again he wasn’t in the same category as Tom when it comes to singing.
