Guitars, Guitars and more toys that go with Guitars

Done that for years and you kind of get by but don’t really get anywhere either, especially if you want to jam or more in my case trying to play along with songs / learning songs by ear. Plus I’m long away from being able to play the solo’s of guitar players I enjoy listening to. There’s also a style thing in play at that point as well. So I want to be able to do my own thing at this point.

What will you do when we get all “bluesy”, and start waxing lyrical about Minor Penatonic Scales?

He could get all happy and talk Mixolydian scales instead?

I think it’s more likely that he’ll tell us to Phrygian off. :astonished:

Pretty sure Dorian, Ionian, and myxalidian are types of columns and should be in the history thread

I thought they were ancient tribes / races of people.

Im not really; I do struggle to translate my understanding of theory onto the fret-board. I tend to try and find exotic chords, especially with some open strings, and then Im stuck, but given Im into pairs of chords (which you find in post-punk and alternative) rather than three-chord arrangements, I can get by.

I do love that Hendrix chord but it is so noticeable.

I use a guy called Paul Davids on Youtube for understanding scale, changes and interesting sounding chords.

And for hard core basic lessons, Pebber Brown, but he is brutal - one lesson he sets is to trill for hours on end!!! Arduous!

Trying to learn some of these…

It takes me ages to get anything correct as its not natural for me. I find myself rewinding youtube so many times. Ive hit a bit of a “i hate guitar” mode at the moment. Normally get one a month!

I watch some Paul Davids.

For me though - Active Melody works great. Just does simple stuff that I can build on what I already know. For example he will give some basic instruction around a nice blues in E. That has basically forced me to really learn the major and minor pentatonic scales in E. It’s given me a nice and easy target to learn that stuff but then an easy application to use it and build on. It still sounds crap but I’ve got a bit of a direction now.

Here’s an example. A 4 note solo. You might like the guitar he’s playing as well.

There could be more Guitar videos on Youtube than porn on the internet…alright maybe not.
Buy yes I found it, from session player Tim Pearce; supporting what the video posted above instructs - emphasis on parts/notes, as well as muting, and NOT playing every string when using chords or pairs of notes etc.

Ive also heard Keef say the strumming hand is actually more important than the fretting one.

Bugger me, Tim Pearce has been around. Keef could well be right when you think about timing, attack, muting etc.

I have a long way to go, and I’m still window shopping…

That’s 100% true re strumming hand.

That’s the depressing thing. I can strum like a god, I just have no idea what to do with my left hand.

Only on a guitar I stress.

Im a bit like that too, can get really tricky and syncopated with strumming, but Im not the cleanest chord changer, which is probably why I gravitated to less technical genres of music, it all seems to be guitar ‘texture’ now rather then emphasised or traditional note playing, so I can still cut it I think…

Off to start the drumming thread, I understand hitting things with sticks. Cue the jokes, but remember, the drummer’s comeback is one of the world’s greatest

Nah. A simple down with a plec if the left has the correct cord and can change in time is a billion times better than my ability to strum whilst spending 8 seconds composing the fingers of my left hand that had to be in place 5 seconds ago.

Hey, Ive said for years its really the hardest gig in a band; I just cannot do it, I cannot separate rhythm between limbs. Would-be helicopter pilots…and have had 3 or 4 in bands and they are a complete PROBLEM, which I guessed was because they really know how valued and rare they are, but then ironically, get the piss ripped out of them, like you have alluded to. Humans, forever twisted, its the hardest job in a rock band!

Ironically I find is simple to do certain things that others find so complicated. I can drum to pretty much any western track but guitar tab? Not a frucking clue.

Holy moon cake. I just found out that Tim Pierce played the Bon Jovi Track Runaway. What a brilliant story it is.

It’s kind of special to me as it was one of the first songs I remember figuring out myself, and I actually figured out it was basically in Am too. I just couldn’t get the solo at all. The ears and fingers were just not good enough - but here it all is. Too fast for me in places but not wholly complicated otherwise.

Great song. Jovi are my fav band but only learnt bits of Hard letting you go and something to believe in so far.
I’m having trouble getting skid rows monkey business down. It annoys me how long it takes me to do the simple things. I get stuck on a bit for days and I don’t know why.
