Harvey ELLIOTT: 2020/21 (on loan at Blackburn Rovers)

Always good to see middle aged men telling 18 year old lads what to do with their hairšŸ˜‚

It’s pay back for them laughing at bald and/or white areas and in my case them telling me to cut my hair.

I agree, it’s all very encouraging. For me it’s his decision making and awareness that makes me think there’s potentially something in it. There seems to be a hint of Pedri about him. When you have a player with that level of control and technique, who also makes good decisions, it’s a really solid foundation. Early impression, but he seems like he thinks about building attacks rather than just looking for decisive attacking actions. If that makes sense.

And he also seemingly adds something that isn’t already in the squad when he moves higher up to receive the ball, into that side pocket between defence and midfield. Something about the angle you get with a leftie there. Him receiving in that space with Salah on the shoulder, Mane and Robertson to his left and Firmino to combine with, is something I’d like to see. That’s when he can unleash the more instinctive parts of his game, the things we’ve seen him do when playing in the front line.

There was a pass he attempted between two defenders which Salah nearly got on the end of. Everything in that pass shows why he is an exceptional talent… A) He see’s the pass, B) He has the confidence to go for it and not delay, C) He nearly executes it… The last point comes with practice and playing more with Salah (learning his speed, movement etc.) The other two are simply not coachable its just raw natural ability.

It’s such a positive approach, his entire game is front foot, very refreshing.

Pedri’s 18, therefore he is rubbish and can’t possibly play in a first team.

Yeah he’s no Camavinga is he.

I think I just made a joke there. Might not be for everyone, but I feel there’s layers to it.

I think for now, it’s just because our midfielders are more combining players than our forward players. And Harvey is more of that combining type. We also don’t have a lot of midfielders at the moment and it’s also maybe for Harvey to feel what are our responsibilities off the ball also. If he stays as part of the first team squad for this season, I believe he’d be back playing off the right more. But of course, if Klopp likes what he’s seeing in that high RCM position (quite a few lefties playing it in last years), he might do it. Basically to be Shaqiri’s replacement.
