Harvey ELLIOTT: 2024/25

Yes, it’s a strange one. Harvey has hardly kicked a ball all season, it’s not like he’s played game after game and offered nothing. When he has figured he’s done well in general.
It looks like AS has basically written a number of players off without giving them a chance.

Isn’t Melissa more a Man Utd transfer guru now.

If Paul Joyce says it I’ll believe it.

“A good offer for xxxxxx would be accepted.” this is the key part. Insert a random name and it will sound legit.

Yeah any player who isn’t a first team starter would probably be sold off a good offer.

Kelleher would have gone on a “good offer” all we got was terrible ones.

I’ve made this point before. Every single player has their price to us. It’s a question of how outlandish it would be.

Harvey loves the club too much to consider leaving because of one season with very little playing time.

Doubt the Club would push him out. Doubt we would sell to another PL club and that means there aren’t many clubs able to afford him outside of England.

I’m not sure it would be fair to look at it that way, Elliott’s whole Liverpool career has been a stop-start one. Obviously, I’d love it if he became a world beater here and played out the entirety of his trophy-ladden career here but he hasn’t shown much consistency so far, has he?

Given that he’s up against some very talented midfielders whose skill-sets are well defined and likely suited to Slot’s demands, I’ll understand if he decides to seek a move elsewhere, play regularly and find his long-term role. I still hope he’ll fight his way into Slot’s plans, though, but I can understand the other side of the argument and I think it’s not something to pin on Slot.

Slot hasn’t given Elliott opportunities to re-establish himself. If he decides to move on account of that, it’s on Slot. If he wants to stay and become a mainstay of the team, as he has repeatedly stated, and he still gets sold, that’s even worse.

Moving him on without giving him a chance wouldn’t sit right with me and would only amplify the sensation that Slot is starting to display some really worrying trends when it comes to the squad’s management and utilisation.

I’ll worry about it when we’re 12 points behind the leaders in the league, not that far in front.

To be honest, I don’t remember many games where Elliott started and actually played well. His best performances that I can recall were the ones where he was subbed on when we were chasing the game. Like I said, I wouldn’t pin that on Slot (or Klopp, for that matter). Maybe he really needs a change of scenery and a guaranteed starting role to play up to his potential.

We don’t need him to become a world beater here though. It’s perfectly fine to have him develop as a squad player and benefit from his contributions.

One of the reasons I would argue for keeping him is that energy he can bring from the bench, Not every player we have has to be good enough to be a nailed-on starter.

I think that he has more in him to be just a squad player in a top six PL side. Maybe Jones’ career trajectory is a good comparison for Elliott because Jones also faced a lot of injury issues during his formative years, as well as a position change, and it led to gradually increased playing time (though Jones still isn’t where I want him to be in terms of consistency but I think it will come with time). Maybe with a permanent change of position/role and some good luck with fitness, Elliott would be able to take his game to the next level. Will he stick around like Jones, though?

It depends also on the player, what he wants to do. He will most probably not want to remain in this role forever just because he’s a Liverpool fan.

And I actually think PL sides are more willing to accept doing business between themselves than before. New rules over the years, money involved, etc.

Backup and rotation players who are happy to be such (quotes aside, we cannot tell if they truly are), I mean, that’s cute… but at this level, you also have to offer genuine competition for a starting spot. Threaten people when there’s a little drop in form, suspension or whatever.

I said two years ago that I don’t see a situation where Jones, Elliott and Carvalho are at the club at the same time for a long time. Some will drop out and there will be new faces.

Jones went up a level since the spring of 2023, Carvalho proved not good enough for this level (at least for now and no, we cannot wait forever and he didn’t want to either), Elliott is still here.

There is nothing wrong if a player like him competes in two positions, RW and AM. He’s not being asked to play LB or to cover 5 positions.

I don’t think the position is the problem, it’s player quality and competition for it.

Contract until 2027, so if there is no movement this summer (or before the summer of 2026), it’s likely that he will need a “Jones in spring 2023” type of spell for both sides to agree on a new deal.

If not, he moves on as a 22-23 year old with either at least 140 or close to 200 games for the club he supports and at least 4-5 major trophies in his bag.

That is already a success.

He doesn’t have to be our Phil Foden, it’s likely that he won’t be. It’s also about people’s perception that might have started when he was this talent out of nowhere included in our squad and naturally then it creates high hopes. But that’s also a long time ago.

A lot of players of Harvey Elliott’s calibre and level of talent will pass here and won’t remain as much as him already or more if he leaves this or next summer.
