I suggested a while back about the possible future idea of us switching to a diamond midfield which would allow us to play Ekitike and Isak together with Wirtz in the hole pulling the strings.
He started the season with three or four consecutive missed headers from great positions. It was encouraging to see him get into those positions but his heading does seem to be iffy - not that it can’t be improved.
My main criticism of him is that he likes to perform a flashy move like a backheeled pass (followed by opponent intercepting the ball) when a simple option would do. He’s young and I’m positive he’ll learn. He seems to be more willing to drop deep and take part in the build-up than Isak - which might suit the team in the long term because I don’t think the coach would want to have exactly the same type of strikers at his disposal.
Ekitike has been by far the biggest positive of the season. He is an excellent addition that should develop into a world class striker. It’s too bad though that we undermined his signing by going after a far more expensive No. 9, who wasn’t needed in the first place.
Ekitike brings that football joy that Firmino had while he was at Liverpool. He has a long way to go before reaching his level obviously - at the moment, it’s his decision making that’s holding him back but it’s understandable since we’re talking about a young man still finding his feet in a new league, in an underperforming side.
He looks like he forgets to lift his head and look up where his teammates are at moments, and he could also release the ball a bit quicker when he holds it up but I’ll be happy if he continues getting more involved and scoring.
Nice of Newcastle and their small-time mentality to do everything in their power to ruin Isak’s next move. I just hope their behaviour costs Isak nothing more than this season. We definitely needed two strikers, though I understand why people are lamenting we moved for Isak of all people having acquired Ekitike.
Newcastle had just qualified for the Champs league, and have big ambitions,
we roll up and tell them we want their star player and you expect them just to roll over and let him join us? Newcastle did what was right for Newcastle,
they dont owe us any favours
I fear Isak might never reach the level he was at, at Newcastle,
he doesnt even look interested half the fucking time
It took them time to get their replacement also… who knows what would’ve happened if they didn’t get Woltemade. What would be the late alternative to that. Different situation to Guehi at Palace, because Marc was and remained part of what Palace are doing, while Isak’s had a few months of not only not playing football, but not being in collective training.
