We’ve seen a increase in the incidence of these injuries across a range of sports the last few years and so it’s incredibly unlikely to be due to changes in the footwear just because of the different shoes these athletes wear. But something has obviously changed resulting in these no longer being surprising to see.

I made a comment in one of the threads yesterday, I think the pregame thread about my dislike of the modern “functional fitness” approach. It often uses power type exercises as an alternative to more foundational strengthening because of a misunderstanding of the concept of specificity (you get better at the specific thing you train) without enough respect of the fact that these exercises are supposed to supplement more basic strength stuff not replace them. I think that means the athletes lose something in their ability to respond positively to it, but also means the overreliance on it means they are exposed to too much of it.

Could the increase in injuries due to the artificial turf used in modern stadium rather than proper soil and grass, which would be a bit more gentle to the joints and muscles, even though it does not have the consistencies of the modern turf?

That’s what people have speculated in the NFL, but we’re seeing it quite a lot recently in the NBA as well. It’s possible there are completely indpendent issues causing the increases in different sports. The NBA is a much faster game today and its maybe a case of men that big just not being meant to run up and down the court the way they are now required to and its just a complete coincidence that two other sports are seeing a parallel increase in these injuries for completely unrelated reasons.

Good luck Hugo for a full recovery. I won’t say speedy as it’s a long one, but the main thing I wish for him is a full recovery, so he can come back at the same level. Years ago it ended a career. Years after that it might not have ended it, but the player wasn’t the same e.g. Barnes. These days I think the prognosis is better again, so good luck to our man Hugo.

In these parts an achilles tear happened to Tyrese Haliburton of the Pacers. His mum and dad lived next door but one for a while, and we would see him visiting. Our Jack Russell liked to shout across the way through the fence when they were grilling out on their deck.

How frustrating

This reminded me of a discussion about 30 years ago on the injuries our cricketers (notably the quick bowlers) all seemed to break down with. One of the few who didnt was an ex miner playing for Leicester i think. That also led to people talk about Truman and others who i think had similar careers.

Don’t know why you’d buy a striker for 6-12 months and certainly not Nunez.

Jayden Danns due back soon.

We need to replace Mo and will probably see Chiesa go too.

Who is the young lad we got from Salford? I vaguely remember he’s supposed to be good. Is he anywhere close to being ready?

Ah, I was so happy for him

Boyhood liverpool fan so I heard

If he was guaranteed to recover fully by the time this year ended, I’d take it. Otherwise, we’re looking at his next season being over before it even began.

My two main injuries in my football career were Achilles rupture around 2013 and broken fibula a few years before that. Ironically the same as our two strikers.

The ruptured Achilles was a lot worse than the fibula break. I thought someone had just kicked me in the back of the leg really hard. Looked around - no one near me.

Post operation it was 6 weeks in a cast with foot facing down and totally immobilised. This is where I was taught how to self inject blood thinners in my belly. The Physio pain was excruciating to get movement range back.

So I did not play football for 12 months, range never the same and the mental battle was always the challenge when jumping and turning etc.

This period of lying on the lounge with leg in a cast coincided with me joining this forum.

That’s doubly painful

Are you alright now and can you play football normally?

Unfortunately I think @rooster had to change to rugby league. So yeah an achilles is v bad.

Achilles injuries appear far more uncommon for younger players, so I’m not sure what his prognosis is. For older players, an achilles tear can be career threatening. Hopefully he can return to his previous form.
