Hugo EKITIKE: 2025/26

I had planned post operation to call it a day from football so did some refereeing until…..someone asked me to play again so guess what…comeback!! Time out was 15 months or so but could have been quicker.

Played for another 10 years and it was totally manageable. Early comeback games were more of a mental battle.

Hugo will be fine.

He’d put more of a shift in than some of them this season

Glad you got back to your football.

I feel so sorry for Hugo. He is young and strong, so, the recovery maybe less than 9 months. Also advances in sports medicine may speed up his recovery.

Thanks @Maria

There have been a few examples in rugby league here in Oz. Top treatment, younger than I was.

They are back in 6 months and they say worst case would be 9 months.

It’s the pace and dynamism that are going to be the issue. I don’t expect him to come back the same player.

I’m gonna take it easy with (wild) predictions. First of all because I ain’t got a clue about these things and second of all because I’ve seen different scenarios come from different predictions around different injuries. Still have enough confidence he’ll be quality whenever he returns to full fitness. Luckily, he’s naturally a nicely rounded player, technically of high quality.

Feel really sorry for you, mate. That must have been very hard.

When I read this, it makes me think that we don’t only need a striker for next season. We need a new striker, full stop. :frowning:

Edit: scratch the above, just saw your later post. Well, let’s hope that Hugo will be fine then when he comes back. :crossed_fingers:

I’ve been pushing to get back my former fitness levels and upped my 5-a-side participation. After a pretty good stepup in level last friday, on the saturday, my left Achilles was sore to throbbing all day. I’ve had Achilles/heel related problems that I’ve had to manage since my 20s. Just have to maintain the strength and length of the tendons on both legs.

So slowly nursing that back to health now. Feel a twinge now so it’s getting better but not ready to push it yet.

Come back stronger than ever Hugo!

On the basis of his last 6 months at Anfield and what I’ve seen since, he wouldn’t.

Pretty much. It’s a bad injury. Properly bad. But surgical techniques have improved incredibly and it neednt be the career ender it used to be. But all in all its a tough and painful road back with a best case scenario of probably Christmas and the worst case scenario way way worse in terms of timeline and who comes out the other side and absolutely no way to know where in between those it will fall

Ebi Eze is a positive example of recovering from this injury. He fully ruptured his Achilles in may 2021 in training, missed the euros similar to Eki is going to with the world cup. Returned back to competitive football in November 2021 hasn’t looked back. Been pretty damn impressive since.

I think we need to sign a striker. I’ve resisted saying it, but it looks like Hugo will be out for the best part of a year, and we don’t know the level of the player who will return. He’s young and will receive the best possible treatment, so hopefully he’s fine, and the Eze example is encouraging.

Still, next year it looks like:

Isak

  • hasn’t shown us his best yet, gets niggly injuries, but we will hopefully see him have a good season next time. Still, he won’t be an ever-present.

Wirtz

  • not fully sure where he will play, but assuming it is central, as we need more pace on the wings?

Gakpo

  • not elite, not bad though. We need better in the side, but he is good enough to be part of the group.

Rio

  • he will surely play more next season as his star rises, but probably still not an ever-present.

Chiesa

  • surely he will move/be moved on.

We need two pacy wingers, and if one of them can play through the middle, so much the better. Or depending on the preference of the manager, we might get a target man like a Mateta type - Alonso liked Boniface playing in front of Wirtz for Leverkusen.

Looks like we have work to do in the market.

In this video there are some similar better or worse examples from the relative or further past of that type of injury.

Some got complicated and needed a second operation.

Hopefully in Hugo’s case he gets the best possible treatment, his approach is the best possible and he also gets that bit of luck needed.

I’ve had problems with my left achilles also - like a thickening of the tendon really low down. I’m now doing extra stretches, and wrapping it before any racket sports, as without I’m fked walking the next day. Knee’s too shot for footy now.

Make sure to work on strengthening it. That means slow calf raises and holding the calf raise at the top of the raise, as far as you can push it. But don’t do it if there is pain. Tendons need to be give load over time to adapt to it. And also you can’t completely rest it. Then it loses ability to bear load. Wishing you a smooth recovery!
