I’ll have a bitter please...It’s the Everton thread

Thing is back then you could probably take this position about the clubs and not be unique in that.

Whatever happened to the “friendly derby”?

It disappeared when Evertonians decided it would be easier to blame Liverpool Football Club for the fact they are continually shit, rather than address the real reasons.

It was when I left Liverpool (and UK altogether) in 1988, friendly banter and all that with my friends and in the pubs. Not sure what’s happened afterwards.

That’s interesting as I felt a fair bit came from Hysen, I do remember at School it never being particularly bad but it was obviously turning when I went to College in 1999.

If I remember correctly, both Liverpool and Everton were two of the best team in 1st division in the 80’s. We fought for trophies and brushed aside other English teams. Could be like @jaffod said…they became bitter when constantly falling behind and looking up at LFC’s achievements. Jealousy and envy will do that I guess.

I suspect that the problem started when the Premier League started, because it heavily favoured the richer clubs. Everton suffered more than we did and they seemed to move from wanting Everton to win, to wanting Liverpool to lose. I find their current small mindedness baffling, because they actually do have a great history and they are finally moving in the right direction in terms of their club ownership.

To be honest, for many years (until very recently when T-rex injured VvD and big nose kicked at Thiago), I wanted Everton to do well (just not as well as LFC) as I much prefer the Merseyside teams over the Manc teams and especially the Greater London Area teams. However, those 2 actions by the Bitters have completely turned me against wishing them well.

We have marked the Hill Dick Stadium.

Whenever we’re in a title race or race to finish in the Top4 Everton happily bent over against our rivals. That’s one of my biggest problems with them.

Pretty sure it changed a bit from their point of view when they won the league twice but were banned from competing in the European Cup on each occasion because of the violent behaviour of our fans at Heysel resulting in 39 deaths and 600 injuries… of course we would not have minded one bit being banned twice if their fans had run riot. Shows how bitter and twisted they are.

I think that’s been shoehorned in retrospectively because I don’t recall anything at the time. I even shared a car down to the 1986 cup final with two Evertonians.

Then your recollections are much different to mine…you think they didn’t mind being banned at all?

I think they minded, but I don’t think the bitterness was there. I think it was the early 2000s that I came across some blues in a pub and actually thought, what the fuck is wrong with you.

Of course, it could be selection bias, because most people make a choice of not hanging out with wankers.

Yeah the bitterness has come afterwards so maybe it’s a useful excuse.

I think it was @Maria asked about the new Everton Stadium. Here is an article on TIA, albeit based on Chloe Bloxam’s experience.

I think you’re right. The real bitterness didn’t creep in until much later. Hard to put an exact time on it but some time in the 90’s probably. Not to the extent it’s got to today though.

I’ve just seen video footage of Everton fans attacking Liverpool fans, as they’re being escorted by the Police to the stadium. Pretty nasty stuff. They looked very bitter to me.
