Ibrahima KONATE: 2025/26

If Virg has not played, cup games it has always been Joe who has played LCB

Yes, depending also on what the partnership is on the day.

If Joe has been available when Virg is out he has always been the LCB.

Whether it was, Joel, Ibou or Jarell

Don’t like what happening to our club. I just don’t like it. Losing Ibou is not the worst thing, but the way we do it, don’t like it.

I know, but partnerships that didn’t include Gomez on the day.

I can’t recollect Ibou ever playing LCB, did Jarrell?

Another one leaving on a free.
Yes
his performances lacked consistency this season but whose didn’t.
It takes years to build ethos, standards and characters into a set of players and we have wiped off so many of them.
I cannot for the life of me understand that we have lost Trent,Robbo,Mo and Ibou on free and if you include Diaz then
that’s five first time players of league winning team last season. That’s borderline criminal from suits uptop.
Absolutely outrageous. Our Administration is a joke right now . We are mess of a club and rather trying to replicate everything Manutd did wrong for so many years. And,still people cannot see Hughes and Edwards do anything wrong.
We have completely dismantled a title winning team in one year and now heading into oblivion. I cannot see us challenging anything other than Top4 next season, irrespective of the coach.

Konate did (rarely, but did), because like I said, Matip never played LCB for us. Not even in a friendly, not even for a second. Quansah did also. And for me he looked better there (though that was under Klopp).

We should make it a policy of selling a player with a single year left in his contract.

This can’t be emphasized enough. As a CB, he’s entering his prime now. He has at least six years left at top level. How did we come to the situation that his contract can run out like that? Again, this is a red signal pointing towards Hughes. You don’t let such a talented player entering his prime run out his contract. You simply don’t.

If he doesn’t stay with us, it will also be a further sign, as @Sweeting already wrote above, that the club has lost the confidence of the players, at least the remaining pillars from Klopp’s former team. Those who can do it, prefer to jump ship because they don’t believe in this project anymore.

Should have sold him last summer.

OK so we let him go,based on last summer what kind of stuffing around might happen re replacement, edge of the seat stuff
.unless we are over it!

And yet all the talk from Konate and from reliable journos is that Konate was keen to stay, but wanted a financial package that the club was not prepared to pay. So the decision is to let him leave.

There is no way on earth that Slot is driving this decision. Not a chance.

This doesn’t look like it has anything to do with Slot. Konate had posted back in April that a deal was close. Quite simply, it looks like the club is unwilling to offer what he wants.

Hughes inherited a situation where the club were very vulnerable to losing players on free contracts. That’s a legacy of Klopp’s departure and the club deciding to pause contract renewals until the post Klopp structure was in place.

It was a mistake, and it should have been corrected. Love him or not, Konaté is a top CB, and let him leave on a free at the age of 27 is
I can’t find the word for it.

And I’m glad he isn’t. He can be more indirectly involved, but still.

Because it would be easy for a head coach or coaching staff to decide that most if not all of them merit new contracts.

That’s not to say the club with all of it’s football decision makers get everything right.

We as fans we will simply not know a lot of the informations behind the scenes, the numbers, calculations, etc.

For the record I suspect Ibou expected to be put on money close to the club’s top earners. That was never going to happen following an erratic season, and not when there are two top defensive prospects the club will be hoping to knock him out of the team in twelve months.
