The aim should be to win the title. That should always be the aim. Always.
And it is possible. We won’t be favourites, but it’s not an unrealistic expectation.
@wyld.at.hrt this isn’t about creating an unrealistic expectation. I dare say, based on how I’ve been with Houllier, Rafa, Rodgers, Kenny and Slot, I’ll still be supportive of Iraola long after the kids currently getting themselves into a froth about him have turned sour.
We will need to have a good summer and Hughes will need to get the job done with 5/6 quality signings. FSG will need to put down the money.
If they get that right, there is absolutely no reason we cannot be challenging for the title. And this isn’t a league that demands perfection, as Klopp faced. This is an 85point league, and that should be the target.
I’m not suggesting that everyone should lose their shit and get fired if we don’t win the league, but I have absolutely no interest in a transition season. If the club goes into a season targeting top four, and falls short what then?
@Limiescouse There is a world of difference in saying the players are shit and that they let Slot down. They aren’t shit - they’d just won a title. But they did not perform at their best and for whatever reason they let their own standards drop. Virgil Van Dijk admitted as much when he reflected on players just giving up. Some of that might have been down to the coaching and the tactics, but some of it was also down to them. If they didn’t like Slot and the way he was expecting them play, then fine - they got rid, and they have nowhere to hide now.
While on compassionate leave Konaté called Liverpool’s then head coach, Arne Slot, to say he was returning to help the team in a defensive injury crisis, and he scored on an emotional comeback against Newcastle at Anfield. But the centre-back knew things were not right. “There was never a moment when I felt like I was on the mend,” he said. “All of these tragic events happened so quickly and as soon as I felt like I was getting my head above water, something else happened.
Could it not be the case that they did try initially to implement them to the best of their abilities but…
the tactics were unsuited for this league. This has been dissected ad nauseam here and various experts on various platforms.
what Arne Slot’s vision of what it should look like was never going to come to fruition with this group of players. Watching the CL final, I got a good idea of what he wanted but we don’t have the players for that.
So then frustration sets in as does fear of failure
Slot isn’t blind, he sees this but he is too far down his plan (in his head) to turn back…if indeed he had something to turn back to.
Players are now scared of making mistakes/unrest at Anfield. So they go into their shells and we see what we saw in the pitch?
I know we all blame players, especially specific players, but these are pros who just won the league. These are not the sort to just “give up”.
And yet this won’t stop some from turning against him for leaving on a free.
It’s amazing how they demand loyalty from the players, but have no problem calling them every name under the sun for not fetching a hefty transfer fee.
But this is rationalization from Konate’s camp it’s not the reason he left. He’s had a contract on the table for 3 years and not signed it.
Going to Real Madrid was clearly the plan, and has been for a long time.
I think this guy is some FIFA youtuber or something so not sure why his channel came up to me but this is a pretty good take. There really isn’t much I can disagree with.
And we sold Quansah, who given the chance of playing for Liverpool regularly would have jumped at the opportunity rather than be given the cold shoulder by Arne.
Yes, but that’s not my point. I’m talking about vilifying players who leave on free transfers for whatever reason.
They’ve made Konate the enemy and TAA before him. They convinced themselves that they don’t care about the club and that they have colluded to defraud the club of the transfer fee, when that’s very rarely the case. Well Konate cared enough to come back from his bereavement leave early.
People move on for whatever reason all the time. That’s just life, stuff happens.
I’ve said about both Trent and Konate that I don’t care how or why they leave its up to them who they play for and who they give their labor to.
I don’t think he doesn’t care or that he actively sought to defraud Liverpool or something like that. However I do think he had a plan to join Madrid for several years and was never really interested in signing a new deal here unless it was for an outrageous salary (which it sounds like we considered at one point). His father or Jota passing away and him feeling depressed about it I don’t see how that factored into his decision-making, the decision was already made.
I’ll remember him fondly, I don’t think hes a great defender but he’s solid and has done a good job here generally.
Yeah, Zealand is a football fanatic, is often streaming on You Tube or Twitch playing the Football Manager series of games or talking about football in general.
The guy wore our shirt and, just like Trent, played his part in our success.
If people want to move on and try something new in their career, then good luck to them. They certainly don’t deserve any criticism for deciding to make changes in their life.
Our head honchos do need to wise up and not let players fanny about with, will they or won’t they sign, and sell them no later than a year left on their contract, ideally 2.
But there is a level of deceit to these Madrid moves that I think fans are right to express distaste for.
I would have a lot more respect for players if they didn’t do ‘I want to sign a contract and I expect it to be sorted soon’ dance. That’s where people get pissed off.
He had the potential to become elite but never really improved from the time he got here. To keep him it seems we’d have needed to pay him as if he was elite, and so other than the disruption his exit causes (which hopefully we’re deep into contingency planning for) its almost certainly for the best that he moves on.
