POV of the off ramp and exiting the tunnel.

Combination of shitty drivers, a fairly fast exit of the tunnel along a bend and some idiot who thought it would be a great fucking idea to put traffic lights right there.

I could imagine the wall under the wrong light could also be quite missleading.

When the guy is driving, it goes bright, dark, bright dark. With a wall in front then has six difeferent surfaces. With the last wall bouncing off natural light, I could see how someone not paying attention could mistake where the turn ends.

Could easily be fixed with better lighting, better signs and not having a blind corner !

Poor design IMO. The off ramp is too short, corner too sharp and occurs too quickly after leaving the main stretch. There’s no room on the LHS, inadequate signage, inadequate lighting and I’d even bet the surfacing is bordering an ice rink as far as traction goes.

I drive this a few times a year, for reference here’s the GPS point. This exit goes right into the CBD of Seattle. the Fairmont is just a few blocks away and it’s close to Pioneer Square and CenturyLink/Safeco complexes.

There’s nothing wrong with that corner, it has good signage and there’s not much you can do about the lighting as the I5 in that section goes literally right underneath the city infrastructure…note the 30mph exit speed restriction. that’s 50km/h.

No offence but that seems illogical given the number and type of accidents that video shows.

Design, to a point, must cater for the “less skilled” or um, “driver error”. To some degree that also means identifying problems and improving things at accident hotspots.

What stood out for me from the youtube videos showing the approach is that I couldn’t see any sign that said how far it was to the intersection.

Sure the drop in speed is a problem, the lighting under the tunnel and then emerging again into daylight is a problem, particularly given the short distance then to the traffic lights, but why are there no signs saying 200 metres to traffic lights or whatever? I’d also have much more prominent signs saying “SLOW - Intersection ahead” or something.

Interesting question with some interesting responses.
Throwing it out here…

I’ve got one.

Failing to accept when you are wrong.

here’s two examples of the signage that drivers just aren’t paying attention to.

#1 a speed advisory beyond the previous 30mp/h, to drop to 20mp/h

Here’s the sign advising a set of lights is ahead

maybe you’re not used to seeing these… but the signage is there.
