That would never pass a stage 2 Road Safety Assessment in the UK. I suspect that the signage would be considered inadequate and the fact that the walls converge on both sides is problematic, especially on the left side where in the event if breaking down you can’t get out of the car. Iighting is probably substandard and I’d even guess the road layout itself isn’t compliant with required geometry. It’s probably too short and I suspect the approach to the corner doesn’t transition correctly vertically or horizontally. There may also be incorrect cross falls on the corner itself.
On top of that I bet there’s inadequate skid resistance in that surfacing.
For the UK that corner would be fully chevroned, there would be slow markings on the road along with a hell of lot more lining etc. There may possibly be heavy transverse lining to warn drivers that they need to slow down. There may even be an anti skid surfacing put down.
In the UK the relevant highway authority for that off slip would be obliged to do something about it after that many accidents.
People’s opinion is irrelevant unless you’re a road safety auditor. It’s whether it meets design standards or not and then passed the Road Safety Audits (not assessments sorry). In the UK I doubt that would pass the audits or meet design standards. I can’t comment on the US equivalent but I wonder how many insurance claims have been made against the highway authority there?
Basically you’ve got to account for the idiot factor, here in the UK at least and then if you have an accident hotspot you are obliged to try and address it.
Just as a side note these procedures have been in place in the UK for donkeys years. But following the Selby rail disaster all road rail interfaces were required to be assessed against accidents of exactly this type. Once assessed if the risk was classified as too high works were required to mitigate those risks.
Regardless, accidents happen all the time and most of those accidents in the aforementioned video about this exit are at night which could easily be drivers under the influence.
before the exit, there’s a sign showing distance to exit at 1/2mile out and 1/4mile out which is approx 700 and 350meters respectively. There’s signs showing to decrease speed (going to convert to metric) from 90kmh (prior to exit) to 50kmh to 30kmh before you enter that corner. once you come out of that corner it’s approx 40m to the intersection. from 30kmh you should be able to come to dead stop within 10m.
I know that they should pander to the lowest common denominator when it comes to road signage and Europe/NA have two completely different styles to road management and layout. But the problem is really people’s lack of attention when behind the wheel…
I eat what I can but being diabetic restricts that number and the boss gets tonnes in at a time (she hasn’t a clue) so when they, the bananas, are a stodgy mess even I, who will eat very ripe babanas, just come to the conclusion it’s time to throw them out.
I’ve come up with the solution, I’ll chop them up and put them in the industrial fruit salade we serve up, can only improve it, far too much apple in it anyway.
