Interesting Finds on the Net

My colleagues laugh but when I write a scientific paper, i have to write in a melody. For me it’s the only way I get things to flow.

Otherwise things become dry and incomprehensible. Or sentences that are just far too long.

My professor once compared my writing style to Julia Donaldson. A backhand compliment if ever I heard one.

Fascinating. As part of my job I often read papers produced by scientists. I seriously struggle with them. A single paragraph has my eyes burning, my mind is in a complete mess up between not having a clue what the passage said and wanting to be somewhere else entirely. After a single report I honestly don’t know what I’ve just read and I’m mentally knackered.

And it’s not the subject matter!

Woah. Skills and a wonderful eye.

When I was part of a research group a colleague asked me to proof read his thesis. It was like 3 encyclopedia brittanica. I understood the stuff just couldn’t get to grips with why it took him 50 pages to say he cooked some powders in an oven.

That’s it exactly. As an engineer we tend to be quite short, direct and to the point. Why use 10 words when 3 will do.

Seriously the stuff I have to read sometimes I really struggle to handle it. The subject matter is fine, not overly technical or scary but they seem to rip the arse out of it and the reports are word salad that honestly screws with my head.

I’ve been in optioneering sessions with them. Some have taken 3-4 days in total to get through defining everything before actually doing the session. I lead one yesterday that took 4hrs start to finish and I still feel guilty about it being too heavy. And it was. I’m seriously looking at how to simplify things for the next one. Basically, I’m convinced that we have come at the problem from the wrong direction if that happens, even if the answer is sensible.
