Jeremie Frimpong (RB/RWB/RM) Bayer Leverkusen

How much would we have paid Trent as a signing on fee? Not that I see this as a direct replacement, but I’d be interested to see how it affects the clubs finances overall.

Good grief.
Sounds like a game of table tennis to me.

You also have to consider the wages. The club was prepared to make TAA the best paid FB in the world. So saving on that wages would be significant.

Beautiful. Wanted this for a while as I could see Frimpong dominate that right flank, allowing Salah to operate centrally more often, hopefully meaning he won’t go missing from games as often. He can also serve as a back-up right winger, meaning we don’t need to sign anyone else to replace Chiesa. Homegrown too. I know some aren’t keen, but prospect of Frimpong and Kerkez as our next full-backs is borderline ejaculatory attacking wise, although I understand the defensive concerns folks may have.

Was it? I’m pretty sure Real Madrid’s package would be financially greater than ours…

Our offer was to make him the highest paid full back in the PL, and one of the highest in the world.

Agree, Reals overall offer will be greater than ours, and playing for Real brings new levels wrt. marketing deals.

I’m not keen on Frimpong because of defensive concerns. Everything else seems to be right, from his character to skill and technical ability but I really wouldn’t want to see TAA replaced with a fullback who’s going to lose focus and be dribbled by on a regular basis. I genuinely hope I’m wrong and that his defensive deficiencies can be masked in Slot’s preferred formation.

Yes, I wasn’t really seeing it as an overall saving, just that we can move on without breaking the bank.

I read this back then in some of the reports so I read it as not just in PL but in world football. But it does make sense that Real can make a bigger offer.

One criticism I think you can have of our current side is that it lacks a little bit of pace, Frimpong would certainly address that need. Would be a good start to the summer business.

Thing with Spanish clubs is that taxes are lower there (years ago, they were supposed to be twice as low as those in England), so there’s that as well. I do wonder what the club offered him during the negotiations and how that compares to Frimpong’s new wages (should he sign).

Named after Jeremy Corbyn, natch. :joy:

Not to rain on the parade but was reading some posts from Leverkusen fans who’d be glad to see him go. Very fast but no end product, and a worse defender than Trent, seems to be the consensus.

Maybe they’re just trying to soften the blow and guess we’d have to trust our recruitment team and Slot on how he’d be utilised

His tally of goals and assists over the last three seasons is actually comparable to TAA’s, I wouldn’t worry too much about that part. The defensive part is where I’m worried (if he signs for Liverpool, obviously).

For those who have watched him more often, does he take set pieces? I don’t remember him taking any for Leverkusen or Netherlands but that sample is small.

May be Slot is also looking at 3-5-3 looking at the CB’s we are linked with.

I’ve seen plenty of posts from Liverpool fans saying they welcome Trent leaving. I wouldn’t read anything into what fans think of departing players.

I can’t get away from the idea that we’re effectively building our Right Back from three players - Bradley, Gomez and Frimpong. You have an attacking option, a defensive option and a good all rounder.

I also think there is an eye on Salah disappearing to AFCON and potentially replacing him as he declines.

So you don’t agree with one of our match going posters who said,

TAA is “a shite full back and probably a shite midfielder if given the chance to play there”.

On that basis, Frimpong can only be a big improvement surely. Sign him up.

This seems to be the overall concern, but his data at Leverkusen is also based on him being a wing back in a back five, rather than a full back in a four, changing his level of responsibility. Found this article from last month which provides some of the data comparison between Trent, Connor and Jezza.
