Said it previously and now its confirmed, with Joe extending, our backline is at its most settled with numbers and quality I would say since Klopp came. I would say VVD and Matip still my first choice but Konate and Gomez as the younger upstarts waiting to take their places are as good as anyone can get as options.
Itās great for us but I am surprised at this move. At his age Gomez needs to be playing regular.
Matip stayed for last season and if rested then Konate was preferred.
I guess with the World Cup in odd place then Gomez may get his game time when Konate and VVD are given some time off if they go long way in WC.
If Gomezās priority was to play in the World Cup he would have left for someone like Villa and been a starter.
Clearly his priority is club success - because it should be, international football is a low quality nonsense - and being part of one of the best teams in the world. Also heās not daft, he knows Matip and van Dijk canāt play forever. Heāll fancy himself to battle with Konate for the 3rd CB role and worst case scenario he will get a decent chunk of playing time at RB.
Anyway, after spending two years out injured he owed us some time back. Iāve no doubt Klopp has spelled out to him a plan to become a starting CB next to Konate in the next couple of years.
Itās the best defence this club has had since i started supporting in 1970.
Weāve had great players of course, and in the seventies and eighties we had a great back 4, but the quality and depth now is unsurpassed.
Brilliant news this. For squad depth, continuity, squad planning - just great all around.
I cannot remember one instance that this guy has ever given LFC any problems whatsoeverā¦
Full marks to him and glad he remains on board the LFC train
