Is it because he‘s British that some posters are trying to defend him?
Joes athleticism strength and speed stood out - seems gone. Crazy because his last big injury was a long time ago. He should be in top form.
He always seems to be a calm player on the pitch but that looks like low confidence and a shocking body language now.
Signed a new contract not long ago and if he doesn’t want to leave then we can not do much about it.
Gomez hasn’t been good for years. He’s not a scapegoat, he’s just bad.
Matip has also been really poor this season and deserves his fair share of criticism. That doesn’t make Gomez any better.
Both are true. He has been really bad and he is scapegoated. There’s an agenda at play when he’s being blamed for all 3 goals yesterday.
He used to be the fastest liverpool player, even faster than Salah. Now, he is as fast as Matip which is a worrying sign. His best trait was the ability to cover huge distances quickly when we do a high line which was integral for us applying a high line and also a higher press. It was never great defensive positioning or being a set-piece danger to the opponent.
As for his new contract, his contract will expire in 2027 which is 4.5 years from now. I wonder if we sell him 1 year from now, how much will we get back?
Well, if it is LFC fans scapegoating Gomez, it may be frustrations boiling over. However, many news media including the Echo were very scathing towards Gomez.
The Echo wrote the following, "
Joe Gomez 2
Allowed Hwang to run clear for the first, lack of communication with Alisson set up the second and put Bajcetic in trouble to initiate the third. Looks completely shot of confidence. "
Espn wrote,"
DF Joe Gomez, 4 - It’s not clear why Gomez decided to clear the ball into a dangerous area after failing to hear Alisson’s shout for the ball. An uninspiring performance from the 25-year-old."
Joe wasnt out of position on the first goal because he was lost of idle. It was doing his job and making his way back into the back line. You can crticize him for not doing so quickly enough, but that ignores the full scope. Even with Gomez making his way back into line, we had plenty of players to deal with it and with Matip especially having great visibility into what was developing and no other player to be responsible for. He was slow to respond, and then explicably stopped before resuming his tracking run. It was those 2 delays that gave Hwang the space to get in his cross when Matip should have been much closer to him.
It is this sort of not covering for each other and critical second guessing that has undermined our performances this season far more than anything you can take from Joe being “out of position”. He has not been good of late and I accept the arguments that its now been a while since we had a consistently good Gomes, but that goal showed the far wider scope of the problem we’ve had with our defending this season.
His main attribute is pace though. If he knows he can’t win possession by stepping out, then he should be busting a nut to get back to position. But he didn’t and here we are…
I didn’t think Gomez was at fault for the first either. Matip just needs to deal with that situation, not dither like he did.
Yeah, Matip looked so rusty/passive in a lot of moment yesterday and some key ones. That situation and also when he was robbed off the ball.
No amount of busting his balls would have allowed him to successfully track Hwang’s run from where Gomez started. You cannot be required to be responsible for both stepping up to put pressure on the ball AND covering the runs in behind you. Did he need to step out? Could he have done more to relieve pressure once he did it? These are things you can ask of his effectiveness in defending the goal. His lack of cover run is ultimately not relevant to the goal going in because the rest of the defense was so bad.
This season so many of the players are simply not doing their job well enough, but more critically they are hanging each other out to dry by not covering for each other, which is really what our strength has been during our best periods. Matip saw where there danger was after Joe stepped out to pressure the ball and simply didnt react.
Gomez hasn’t really recovered from his injuries, I don’t think any long term one has showed decent form on return. Suppose VVD last season after the first month or two but even then his start mirrored last year.
Which has to make you worried on Diaz.
Diaz didn’t do his ACL, did he?
Gomez is on 26 games so far this season and it’s already the third(!) most in a full season for us so far. In 7 and a half seasons. He played more than this much only twice.
Have you actually watched the replay of the goal where he had to track a player who got in behind Robbo on the left.
When recovering to his position he had both Robbo and Matip covering but as he was moving back Robbo moved left before he had recovered his position and what Joel did was unfathomable.
On the 2nd goal he has to head the ball because either Ali didn’t call or called late.
He hasn’t lost his speed but I do feel he has lost his sharpness on the turn and lateral movement he is getting beaten by players changing direction when he appears to be in a good defensive position. He is starting to get like Trent at times too easily beaten.
I think that’s always been a bit of a understated weakness. He is quick, but only when he gets moving. He has never been quick to get going or turning, and his body positions have often exacerbated that.
He was far better before his injuries just seems to lack a bit of mobility now
Never thought I would say this but Nat Phillips is better than Gomez.
Crazy to see how many games and minutes Joe has this season.
Two full pre seasons and one and a half full season since he returned from his last big injury.
Physically he is nowhere near the player he used to be. Doesn’t look as if he still has that in him after all the injuries.
