Joël MATIP: 2022/23

Carl Weathers?

The Athletic:

Matip enters the season with one year remaining on his contract and, as he turns 32 in August, is past his peak years. The new right-sided centre-back role appears less suited to his skill set. With his contract situation, it is unlikely Liverpool will extract much value or interest for him in the market and he is expected to stay.

In that case, maybe we’ll allow both Ramsay and Bradley on loans for next season and Gomez to remain on paper as the first RB backup. Then, Matip would leave on a free in 2024.

I was actually wondering how much interest there would be in Matip. Didn’t expect a big fee, but maybe it just won’t happen this summer. Frustrating, but that’s how it is when we are among the top of the football food chain.

we know where this is going. anything after us, will be a cut in pay. I doubt he’ll depart the club this season. He’ll see this last year out and leave on a free.

I am fine with him leaving for free next year, he was a free transfer for us as well, so what’s the problem? He is alreay used to our style of play etc. and imo, he is more reliable than Gomez as a backup tbf. And I really don’t want to have a situation again that we have to play Fabinho or another midfielder in defence.

That’s something we can sort out next year.

Not bothered if we don’t profit from Matip, in fact I’d be happy if he was offered a years extension. Last 2 seasons he’s been relatively injury free and he’s still fine as a back up option.

Not a good time to move for him anyway.

Youd think on his wages he would be able to afford a camera that takes pics in colour.

Well you lot know me. I prefer him to both Gomez and Konate so Id keep him.

Probably too expensive to replace.
