The last poster to say ‘mark my words’ had to eat them, have you got your knife and fork ready German? :joy:

Klopp
I understand why my name comes up when the national team coach is discussed, but now is not the time to really talk about it—and certainly not with me.

Bet your house on it.

“Now is not the time to talk about it” basically translates as “It’s a done deal, but the optics would be bad if we announced it this week”

I’d love to see what he could do with this team.

I think he could do even more with the Dutch team

That is something that could be true in purely theoretical terms, but will 100% never happen.

:face_with_peeking_eye::joy:

Especially not considering our rivalry with the Netherlands—Klopp would never be forgiven for that. (In contrast, no one here has a problem with Tuchel taking over England.)

It’s much more likely that Slot becomes the new manager of the Netherlands and the two could face each other in the future.

Jurgen Klopp: “If that goal is illegal, then Arsenal WOULDN’T be English champions.

They scored 60% of their goals like that.

It is still pretty controversial for England to have a foreign manager, even though we’ve now done it 3 times, but yeah whatever dissatisfaction there is about Tuchel is because he isnt English rather than because he’s German.

The think with the england job though is there is really is a paucity of qualified candidates. Its well known an English manager has never led their team to the Prem (the last was Wilkerson with Leeds the year before it became the Prem), but it’s worse than that. We’ve ever only ever seen 4 English managers lead their team to CL qualification in the 30 years since the tournament expanded to >1 team. Interestingly of those four one had already been England manager, and was hounded out of the job as a “failure”, and another spent years petitioning for the role only to never be inconsideration because he’s from the wrong class, and his face doesn’t fit amongst the tie and blazer class in the FA

The Dutch dont really have that excuse.

I have another theory.

Dutch may create great players but they make the worst managers in the long run. The only exceptions were Michels, Cryuff, and maybe Hiddink.
It always devolves into infighting, players downing tools etc.

They should just stop being managers. Dutch honesty doesn’t work in football management.

Any dissatisfaction is because he is England manager. As far as I can remember, the role hss been an Aunt Sally for the eternally deluded.

Could you please briefly explain that thing about that aunt to me? When I Googled it, all I saw was a woman getting pelted with sticks by men?? :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Might be a worzul gummadge reference? It was a tv show in the 70’s about scare crows who were alive. Worzel was the main character who deluded himself that Aunt Sally, another scare crow, would love him. And that pursuing hrr was worth any cost. It usually didnt go well for him.

Sorry, yes, it was an old fairground attraction whereby people would throw things at a wooden doll trying to knock off it’s head (a similar idea to a coconut shy), it was featured in Worzel Gummadge as @redfanman says.

The phrase “Aunt Sally” also means a popular target that people throw abuse as a scapegoat for their anger, which was the usage I was meaning. It doesn’t matter who the England manager is, he will be blamed for everything. I’m trying to think of a German equivalent. Maybe “Blitzableiter”?

Oh, okay, so Tuchel isn’t a scarecrow, then? In our case, that guy would probably be more of a “Prügelknabe”.
