still is. Fab in his prime was an amazing shield for them as well.
Many great posts in here…
Alls I can say is, remember those early Mo years when he received the ball somewhere within 30 yards of goal and it was just, ‘Yep…this is going in.’
Those were good days.
couldn’t wait to give my tupence worth, but his best signing was himself when he got the contract to manage our great club, so sorry if it’s already been posted, as I didn’t read all posts on here
There have been a lot, it might be easier to identify the worst.
How can you choose between VVD, Mo, Ali, Robbo, Sadio etc etc?
Gun to my head, VVD, Mo and Ali in that order, although I could be persuaded that any of those is the best.
Getting VVD just showed that we were back as a major force as he was highly prized at the time and his imperiousness from day one raised expectations and confidence in the whole team.
Hell of a question a toss up between VVD,Robbo,Ali,Mo,but they all played different roles,of course, for example Take VVD out and there have been occasions when our defence has struggled.
So probably the best, and certainly value for money is Robbo, our left side had looked a bit ordinary at times till Robbo came. His quick thinking, speed and ability to pick out a man,or have a dig himself, brings me to him.
But it isn’t easy.
Maybe, in the end, Klopp’s best signing was all of our hearts.
Nah, it’s Ali.
Yes, we had been searching for a left back for so long, with various pretenders who never quite made the position their own for various reasons. Aurelio, Riise, Enrique etc etc.
Robertson was such an unexpected success, and such a bargain that he is certainly up there.
I probably have more respect for what Klopp has done the summer gone for the midfield than any one signing. He has literally overhauled the entire midfield with youth, vigour and ability, to take over a very ageing squad, for what is peanuts in today’s money, in an environment where the world over our club was being seen as a fading star. In one year. And we are leading the title race at this stage.
Beyond the actual signings, he has managed to balance the minutes of the new guys with youngsters in the middle like Harvey and Curtis while introduce academy players that may very well become household names like Quansah and Bradley.
For me Klopp really had saved the best until last. His coaching has been fantastic but his management has been mind blowing this season. Polar opposite to Fergie in terms building a strong squad legacy for the next guy to take the reins of.
Maybe wrong thread but
Moreno to his credit was really looking very good in the season before he got injured. To think Robbo was bought in as a backup and for him to become a world class left back was unexpected.
There were expectations of VVD , Mane , Salah. Even Gini and Fabinho had expectations when they came in.
We could have bought someone for way more money and there would be no guarantee that he would have become a success.
Getting Robbo for that price might have enabled us to pay slightly over the norm for other guys.
Let’s not forget that Gravenberch is between the two of these in age…
Dom and Mac aren’t old as well.
Surprised no one has mentioned Jota here. Such an important, low-key amazing signing for us, and an absolute bargain to boot. So many matches he’s popped up with a crucial goal when it’s looked like we might not score.
He maybe doesn’t have the impact of a Salah or a Mané, but I reckon he’s been one of the more astute signings made during the Klopp era. A Liverpool player if there ever was one.
I think we can count ourselves blessed when this thread could have 10 genuine options. Over about 7 years only. Recruitment team have knocked it out of the park.
One player hasn’t been mentioned yet:
I know that he isn’t coming from the outside, and was already at the club as a youngster. But we all know that he is what he is today thanks to Kloppo and his staff. An absolutely fabulous piece of development work.
Otherwise, I really don’t know. There are so many great signings over the years. The obvious, spectacular ones, like Mané, Salah, VVD, Alli, but also those flying under the radar at the beginning, only to be proven masterstrokes over time: Gini, Robbo, Matip etc.
Moreno’s a great example of a player who suddenly was in good form before he got injured, but who we still got rid of eventually the following season and rightly so.
W/o a shadow of a doubt - Lucas!
How can you pick one?
For being here since almost the very start, and on a free transfer, I’d have to say Joel Matip.
Yes, you can point to VVD, Alisson, Salah, or maybe Mane as being the start of it all, but for value, longevity, just going under the radar, fighting back despite the injuries, Matip resembles a lot of Klopp’s and FSG’s approach.
There is only 1 correct answer, and that is the signing that cost us nothing, but won us a trophy on debut. Step forward
Was great against Atletico.
