It’s why when I hear these transfer rumours I’d laugh them off, no one in Spain is paying 120m for anyone soon.
As if Barca is this bad I’m pretty sure RM aren’t far behind.

I don’t know what the spanish league restrictions are but I think that 103% figure may be based on a covid hit year? Sid Lowe in the Guardian gave the figures of 110% with Messi, and 95% without but also said in 2019/20 the ratio was only 75%.
@Limiescouse said there had been some additional players taking a paycut from those mentioned earlier to help them with registering some of the new players. There are probably more ongoing.
I’m not so sure about that. Real Madrid haven’t been spending as heavily in recent years. I think their revenue last year held up better than Barca’s did (showing a profit against Barca’s loss), and less of their debt they owe is due to be repaid in the near term. Their wage cap level hasn’t fallen as dramatically as Barca’s has. They also have a clearer path to reducing costs than Barca do with Benzima, Bale, Modric, Isco and Marcelo all out of contract next summer.
I think Real Madrid may be feeling the pinch, but they have space to work with.

Didn’t realize Madrid’s wage bill is that high; €641m, compared to Barcelona’s €671m.
Yes, I think Ramos was reportedly earning 300k per week, as is Bale with Hazard on 400k. Alaba is apparently on a deal of around 375k a week - but without a fee being paid to Bayern the overall cost is probably less outrageous. They will be saving approximately 200k a week from Varane’s wages.
Like Chelsea, they seem to have loads of players going out each year that can chip in money into the clubs budget from loan and transfer fees and in some may cases may help reduce the wage bill to allow it to meet the league’s restrictions.
They are due to have about 750k+ a week dropping off the wage bill next summer if they don’t renew any contracts due to expire.
As around £100mill has already been paid off,Real still need to find over £600mill,ontop of their debt to pay for the new stadium refurb, all that money spent on a hotel, new restaurants and car park and it only has something stupid like 1 extra or less seating capacity.
Their net debt on the club ignoring the refurb since 2019 has apparently gone from 241m to 46m. This despite them seeing a fall in revenues because of Covid of approximately 300m. They say they have still turned a profit in both 19/20 and 20/21.
The loan for the stadium is on a 30 year deal. I don’t know how much interest they are being charged on this but would imagine it is still quite low (Barca’s emergency 15 year loan earlier this year was at just 3% I think).
Not much though, the train is running down the track so to speak.
Would appreciate if someone explains the wage-cap thing.
I think RM have been clearing wages and saving on transfers in order to take a good run at Mbappe. Unfortunately. Probably Pogba as well.
My understanding is that it isnt a pure wage cap, but factors in transfer spending plus wages of players and non-admin staff. I think the focus on wages alone with barca has been because they were fucked even without spending a penny in transfer fees.\
Explaining LaLiga’s squad cost limits
Since 2013, LaLiga’s economic control department has worked with an internal group of analysts to review historical finances of every club to establish a squad cost limit for the season, which is confirmed before the new transfer window opens.
The squad cost limit represents the total amount that clubs can spend on their first-team players, first-team coach, assistant coach and head physio, as well as their reserve teams, academy and any non-registered squad players. Clubs are free to choose how much of this to spend on transfers or on wages, provided the overall limit is not exceeded.
Unlike measures such as UEFA Financial Fair Play, LaLiga and its clubs agree these cost limits before spending takes place, rather than after the fact. Working in this way, clubs are aware of the amounts that can be spent in advance, meaning they can more easily comply with their limits and avoid the creation of unsustainable debt.
How unusual is it that Laporta couldn’t get straight answers about the precise size of the hole they were in without hiring Deloite to do an audit? We’re seeing reports now that the debt is 100s of millions bigger than he initially thought they were, something he’d previously hinted at with comments about things being worse than he thought. Even the Messi situation even appears to have turned on this growing reality, almost like they went from thinking it difficult but doable to realizing it was actually impossible in light of the real finances.
It just seems staggering to me that a company the size of Barca can run things in a way that they don’t know the status of their financial situation without bringing in a third party to evaluate it. Is this normal? Or is this likely a result of Laporta inheriting books that were cooked to hide some of the worst issues?
I think it might be at least in part because Barcelona’s situation has a number of moving parts that can complicate the picture. Clearly the club seems to have thought that the Spanish FA would grant some leniency on the cap owing to Covid, and that hasn’t happened.
Although, I wouldn’t be surprised if there are things the club keeps deliberately murky (that swap deal with Juve last year had everyone surprised for example). Spending the sums they have over the last 5 years and basically having no value to show for it is pretty shocking.
Hey now, a possible twist: Mundo Deportivo are saying he’ll stay - AND has been offered the #10…!!
Meanwhile, Sport are saying he’s being offered to Arsenal…
I was thinking this might be on the cards - the Auba to Barca rumour would then make more sense (perhaps not much more but at least a little bit ).
All those #10’s… so many of them need a new home.
Like a bunch of expensive puppies that nobody wants to adopt.
Lionel Messi’s used tissue from emotional press conference up for auction - Daily Star
HaHa… The listing states…
The tissue can be used to clone another Messi…
Ya just gotta love the sellers ambitions eh!
Starting Bid… I kid you not… $1million dollars!
What did he use the tissue for?
Must have been a wet dream … a Parisien dream.
It’s amazing that we live in a world of Covid and a person snob covered rag is being sold on line for 1 million dollars
