“club”?

I don’t subscribe to The Athletic, but I am told the story on Barcelona’s finances is remarkable. Anyone read it?

Not for me, unfortunately.

Damn, that Leeds penalty clause is the transfer market equivalent of blood in the water.

What is the penalty clause?

If they aren’t paid for Rafinha by September 1, another 10 million Euros.

The interesting question might be whether or not that penalty would increase the asset price of Rafinha (so spread over the lifetime of his contract) or go right into this year’s expenses, putting them further offside the La Liga rules.

Makes you wonder if other Barca players have this clause.

La Liga and Spanish Football should grow a spine and dump these cunts. Surely they realise that Barcelona is no longer an asset but an appendage.

Those are the two free signings. I’d imagine it would be harder to include in the contracts of the players they paid money for.

They won’t do it because it would be the perfect doomsday scenario for La Liga. They’d instantly devolve into a one-club league, like Bundesliga. Real Madrid would likely win the next twenty + titles on the trot, bar maybe the odd accident here and there.

For La Liga, a strong Barca is absolutely instrumental. That’s why I expect them to protect them as much as they can. Will that be enough to save them from going into administration? Probably. Barca is a historic institution, 'Mas que un club". And in the too-big-to-fail category. If things go from bad to worse, they’ll probably end up being bailed out by the Catalan state.

Or even worse, they’ll give up on their supporters-owned structure, and another filthy-rich Arab state will come in and use them as a sports-washing tool.

I remember the phrase used during the financial crisis: Too Big To Fail.

theyre going to get purchased by a state, arent they?

Its a thing of beauty, when it comes to Barca…

what is it they say about treating people when you are on the way up?

Whatever the level of dodgyness they will still finish top 2 and be in CL knockout stage.

depending on who they can register for europe.

is all this shenanigans where they can sign players but not play them just affecting Laliga?

i assume so, but if it does affect europe, theyll struggle to get out of thier group.

i know they are not the forum darlings or anything, but its sad to see the Barca we all used to know, turn out this way.

Hope they go under.

It is just bewildering to see. It was not that long ago that Barca fans would happily explain how different they were from Real Madrid pointing to what Real would do for players and money, and wax philosophically about La Masia.

Neymar broke them. It’s easy to forget now that a lot of that was driven by PSG being unhappy about their conduct around Veratti and wanting to throw a counter punch. Barca then went into the textbook emotional spiral that bullies experience after being it on the nose for the first time and having to address their lack of invincibility.
