I kind of get that Jones might just be generally quite frustrated and this was just something that caused it to bubble over.
Poor season last season, played out of position at times, new manager coming in to try and impress, no sign of a new contract, no sign of progress on the long mooted move to Inter. And all whilst he has quite a high opinion of his own abilities but also not being able to nail down a place.
It’s no excuse for having a public strop about something quite minor. But, he’s a man stuck between two bus stops right now and he probably just wants to either get the contract he thinks he deserves or be allowed to move on.
I was quite surprised to see the criticism of his performance from Wednesday when I logged in here the following morning. From up where I was sitting I thought he was really quite positive playing in a role similar to the one he played so well for the England 21s under Carsely. Its one where his patience on the ball is rewarded while still having far more attacking instincts to get it forward than most 6s do.
McConnell hasn’t really shone when brought into the first team yet but he is also looking sharp. You can see why the coaches always like him. Noticed a few times the team is fannying around a bit trying to play the extra pass and he just takes it and says “enough of that shit” drives past a player and smashes it in the goal.
I expect he will go on loan this year again but I can imagine Iraola will like how direct he plays.
If Jones leaves it’s not exactly going to leave a gap that can’t very easily be filled. If he wasn’t from here then none of us would give 2 fucks if he stays or goes. I still don’t. He’s a bang average footballer, a squad player who we’ll support if he plays for us this season. He’s done ok for us, but so have many many others over the years.
I’m more concerned about our CB area and bringing in a world class winger, midfielder (regardless of Jones) and rightback to be honest than whether Curtis stays or goes or if he got angry after a pre season game.
